Equicom Group and JE Holdings of the Gokongwei family partner to reinvent healthcare through Maxicare

The Equicom Group, the company behind Maxicare, the leading HMO company in the Philippines, and JE Holdings, Inc., announced a strategic partnership that will allow Maxicare to revolutionize its mission of helping Filipinos live their best lives.

The Equicom Group, the company behind Maxicare, the leading HMO company in the Philippines, and JE Holdings, Inc., announced a strategic partnership that will allow Maxicare to revolutionize its mission of helping Filipinos live their best lives.

JE Holdings, a privately-held investment company of the Gokongwei family, will become a co-equal shareholder of Maxicare alongside the Equicom Group. The partnership agreement, approved by the Insurance Commission on May 5, 2022, will result in a bigger and stronger Maxicare due to the synergies to be derived from the partnership.

The Equicom Group, led by Chairman Antonio Go, is a diversified conglomerate engaged in the areas of healthcare, information technology, banking, and financial services.

According to Mr. Go, the agreement entered with JE Holdings is a partnership of equals that will give Maxicare a stronger foothold in the country’s healthcare industry. “Maxicare is already the top HMO provider in the Philippines; this partnership will only strengthen our lead in the healthcare sector and will help us deliver industry-defining services that will benefit Filipino consumers,” Go said.

For his part, JE Holdings Chairman Lance Gokongwei said the company is very excited to work with the Equicom Group on this noble undertaking that will further democratize the delivery of essential healthcare services to our countrymen.

“We share Maxicare’s vision for the future of healthcare in the Philippines. As their partner, we commit our support as they continue to innovate to help bring a better and comprehensive healthcare system in our country. We have high hopes that the synergy from this partnership will provide unparalleled customer experience,” Gokongwei said.

Maxicare CEO Sean Argos shared that the partnership between Equicom Group and JE Holdings will create new opportunities that will elevate healthcare services in the country.

“We imagine a future where healthcare services in the country will be further enhanced through a new industry-leading healthcare ecosystem that will benefit Maxicare’s medical provider partners and provide Maxicare members better customer experience, affordability, and availability,” said Argos.

He also shared Maxicare’s plans to expand into new products and services in order to reach and serve more Filipinos, details of which will be announced in the coming months. By leveraging the combined Equicom and Gokongwei ecosystem, Maxicare will now have access to more than 36 million customers, he said.

Established in 1987 by an esteemed group of doctors and businessmen with the vision to deliver a better healthcare system, Maxicare Healthcare Corporation is one of the pioneers in the health maintenance organization (HMO) industry in the Philippines.

As the largest HMO provider in the country, Maxicare continuously provides Filipinos comprehensive healthcare programs via its wide network of medical providers fortified by a strong customer support system. Currently, it services the largest number of HMO customers across the country from corporate segment, small and medium-sized enterprises to families and individuals via its more than 24,000 affiliated doctors and specialists, 1,400 hospitals and clinics, 1,000 dental clinics, 180 rehabilitation, dialysis, and eye centers.

EJ De Perio asserts the inevitability of endings on heartfelt debut single “Panandalian”

Saturday, May 28, 2022

 EJ De Perio

The heart-warming ballad serves as his first official single as a signed artist under Sony Music Philippines

Filipino singer-songwriter EJ De Perio defies the concept of perpetuity on “Panandalian,” his first official single under Sony Music Philippines.

Brimming with laid-back, acoustic guitars and minimal instrumentation, the heartfelt ballad asserts his sentiment that despite the uncertainty of the future, there will always be that one person who is willing to stick out with you through thick and thin.

“I wrote Panandalian out of the realization that nothing’s gonna last forever, and everything must come to an end,” says the talented newcomer. “The song is about preparing yourself for the inevitable change, and making sure to protect that one person who is willing to keep things the same way—even if everything around you is constantly evolving.”

The stripped-down track is produced by fellow singer-songwriter Migz Haleco, who honed EJ De Perio’s folk-pop sound with mellow sensibilities.

“I’m really glad that Migz helped me find the sound that fits my vision,” De Perio shares. “With Migz, it’s always a collaborative process. I provide input, and he executes it well.”

The release of “Panandalian” comes with a poignant music video helmed by young filmmaker Ivan Pasia. The MV, which stars young actor Francis Magundayao, conveys the message of the song with riveting earnestness, keenly aware of its commitment to power through despite life taking us on a bumpy ride.

A few months ago, EJ De Perio teased the streaming public with “BUNTONG HININGA” under WATERWALK Records. The guitar-pop ballad documents a conversation between him and God in one of his dreams. He also recently signed with Sony Music Philippines, and is planning to release thematically binding songs about “unspoken emotions.”

“I’ve been an independent singer-songwriter for 5 years and I didn’t see this coming,” De Perio shares in a statement. “I’m just glad that the Sony Music Philippines really believed in what I do and what I write. In return, I’m determined to use my platform to inspire more people through music. This is a gift that I hope to continue doing for more years to come.”

EJ De Perio’s “Panandalian” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Philippines. Watch the music video here.

Insular Foundation welcomes 27 new Gold Eagle College Scholars

Gold Eagle College Scholars

Insular Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of Insular Life (InLife), welcomed 27 new college scholars who are taking up education, mathematics, and statistics courses in its partner state universities.

The Insular Foundation welcomed the new Insular Gold Eagle Scholars from the University of Philippines Diliman (UPD), Aurora State College of Technology (ASCOT), Benguet State University (BSU), Bohol Island State University (BISU), Central Mindanao University (CMU), and Davao Oriental State College of Science and Technology (DOSCST).

During its online orientation, the Insular Foundation discussed the scholarship benefits which include stipend, transportation, and book allowance; the scholarship renewal rules; and the two-year requirement to serve in the country after graduation.

Insular Foundation Executive Director Ana Maria R. Soriano said that through the Insular Gold Eagle Scholarship Program, InLife and the Foundation help poor but academically gifted students become teachers and data scientists.

She also encouraged the scholars to become good influencers and leaders. “Be involved in meaningful pursuits and enjoy college life without losing sight of your purpose which is to get your college degree at the prescribed time.”

Two of the new scholars expressed their appreciation to the Foundation for bringing them closer to their dream to become teachers.

“My long-term goal and my family’s dream for me to become an educator is a step closer to reality because of your generosity. By awarding me this scholarship, you have lightened our financial burden. The scholarship will also allow me to focus more on the most important aspect of school and that is learning. Donors like the Insular Foundation make life brighter for us. I hope that one day, I too will be in a position to bring smiles to needy students,” said Bryan Bryle Lloren from BISU.

“The scholarship that you granted is not just for us, the scholars, rather, it will be for our people. As a future educator, the scholarship will serve as my motivation to do greater good. Ayon nga sa ating kasabihan, ang edukasyon ay para sa kabataan at para sa bayan,” said Avryll Arda from UPD.

For school year 2021 to 2022, the Insular Foundation’s Gold Eagle College Scholarship Program supported a total of 108 scholars taking up education in the six partner state universities and colleges, and mathematics and statistics in UPD. Since its relaunch in 2008, the program has produced 74 scholar-graduates.

Hope for the future

Meanwhile, as part of the Foundation’s holistic educational intervention for its scholars and other students, it conducted a webinar entitled “Asking for a Friend: How can I feel hopeful about my future?” in partnership with Edukasyon.ph.

More than 100 Insular Foundation scholars and other students from the Edukasyon.ph network participated in an insightful discussion about the struggles of students and how to pursue goals with a positive attitude during the pandemic.

Resource speakers Gracie Orden, Empath Mental Health Professional and Counselor; and Steph Naval, youth advocate, founder and CEO of Empath Corporation, shared the following insights to foster hopefulness even during these trying times:

• Thriving is the key. Most Filipinos, not just students, are on survival mode during the pandemic but it is better to thrive than to survive. When we thrive, we try to develop ourselves and be successful in whatever we do.

• Don’t forget to do self-care or have time for yourself. Develop a self-care list and follow it regularly. The list may include simple activities like hugging family members, playing with pets, taking a shower, doing mindful breathing, and appreciating nature.

• Cling on to hope which is what we need now, especially the youth. Hope is believing that things will get better. Push goals forward, and act on these goals.

• Practice being hopeful to make it a habit. Being hopeful involves acknowledging the current difficult situation to move forward. One good practice is to keep a gratitude journal: list down even the small things to be grateful for even during a challenging situation.

• Embrace help from others. For students, be open to receive support from family, trusted friends, teachers, guidance counselor, and even online.

UBX bags Best ATM Project Award at the 2022 Asset Triple A Digital Awards

UBX, the leading open finance platform in the Philippines, bagged the Best ATM Project Award at the 2022 Asset Triple A Digital Awards for its groundbreaking Mobile ATM Solution, which empowered financial institutions and community-based financial services providers to provide ATM solutions to far-flung areas during the pandemic.

Operated under UBX’s banking-as-a-service platform and community - i2i, the Mobile ATM solution was developed to provide safer access to government cash assistance projects such as 4Ps and SAP in remote areas. It also created an additional source of income for small businesses that were successfully onboarded as cash agents.

i2i prides itself in being the nation’s fastest growing payments and cash disbursement network. It enables banks, cooperatives, MSMEs and other non-banking financial institutions to connect with each other to expand their reach and digital capabilities in the name of financial inclusion.

“UBX’s i2i Mobile ATM digital project is a standout initiative in the Philippines and plays an important part in driving financial inclusion in the country. The project was timely given the impact of COVID-19 at the time, enabling distribution and access to funds in the remote areas of the Philippines,” according to the The Asset Board of Editors.

The Asset Triple A Digital Awards recognizes financial institutions and technology firms that have excelled in innovation and developing a unique digital experience for customers across the Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. The awards are adjudicated by The Asset's board of editors who collectively have several decades' worth of experience evaluating industry awards in the Asia-Pacific and the Middle East.

By launching its groundbreaking Mobile ATM solution, UBX, through i2i, was able to augment the income of small businesses directly affected by the quarantine like travel & tour operators, sari-sari stores and carinderias have found an alternative line of business in the midst of the pandemic.

Aside from boosting business for MSMEs in the time of COVID-19, the Mobile ATM digital project guaranteed safer access for the at-risk population, including pensioners. Since they cannot travel to nearby towns or the nearest ATM, either of which could be at least several kilometers away, i2i was able to provide a solution.

Despite the difficulty in delivering its devices in the midst of the harsh lockdown in 2020, i2i managed to deliver. In the last half of 2020 alone, monthly i2i Mobile ATM volumes increased by 3000 percent. At the start of last year, over 1,300 new financial service providers and agents joined the network via a joint venture with Irish financial services technology giant Fexco. Currently, over 3,000 devices are deployed all over the country processing almost P5 billion cash out transactions from year to date mostly in remote locations.

i2i is the Philippines’ fastest-growing open finance and banking-as-a-service platform and community, digitally enabling financial institutions and service providers to bring in-demand financial services to underserved communities nationwide. It has product offerings ranging from money transfers via PESONet and Instapay, mobile ATM services, API integration and more.

i2i connects hundreds of rural and thrift banks to the National Retail Payment System (NRPS) and has over 3,000 agents to date.

“It is humbling to be recognized for our efforts in promoting financial inclusion, since this challenges us to strive for more. There is definitely more to expect from i2i in the near future–projects which are all driven by our commitment to bring finance closer to the everyday Filipino,” UBX President John Januszczak said.

SMDC creates sustainable, community-centric mid-rise residential garden communities

Thursday, May 26, 2022

Dedicated to providing Filipinos with homes that grow with them and last a lifetime, SM Development Corporation (SMDC), a known trailblazer in the real estate industry, now brings their newest mid-rise residential garden communities in progressive locations nationwide.

Among the key economic corridors that these master-planned developments will be present in are Bulacan, Laguna, Iloilo, and Cagayan de Oro. These strategic locations are low-density areas where major businesses and government infrastructure projects are now mushrooming — thus giving residents access not just to a wide array of economic opportunities, but to holistic lifestyle choices as well.

This is to meet the ever-changing needs of Filipino home buyers, especially with the pandemic accentuating the importance of health and wellness-related location features and well-being amenities.

As such, SMDC’s mid-rise residential garden communities revolve around green living and sustainability. The integration of commercial spaces, together with walkability within and beyond these developments, ensure that investors are granted a safe, secure, convenient, and comfortable modern lifestyle.

True to the SMDC trademark of democratizing homeownership and making the luxurious affordable, these mid-rise residential garden communities are at very attainable price points — making them the perfect home for young individuals and start-up families.

A Lifetime Investment

SMDC’s multi-pronged approach to sustainability — combining environmental, social, and economic aspects — serves as the bedrock for these mid-rise residential garden developments’ claim as lifetime investments.

For instance, environmental sustainability is practiced in the installation of LED lights that enable lower power consumption, and the abundance of windows for natural light and ventilation.

Economic sustainability, on the other hand, is demonstrated through programs such as ‘The Good Guys Weekend Market’ that encourages stakeholders’ entrepreneurial spirit, and ‘The Good Guys Job Market’ that opens up employment opportunities for them. In addition, SMDC’s end-to-end property management and leasing services ensure that their developments continue to appreciate in value, be it through capital appreciation or rental income.

Finally, social sustainability is exhibited through living spaces and community events that encourage social interaction among the residents.

All these support SMDC's aim of building and taking care of sustainable communities, while simultaneously addressing the Philippines’ housing backlog. In doing so, SMDC contributes to the greater goal of being a catalyst for economic growth and nation-building.

Learn more about these on Eden Awaits: Step Into Modern Paradise with SMDC’s Mid-Rise Residential Garden Communities, a talk about green homes, its positive effects on the lives of Filipinos, and its investment potential.

Panelists include celebrity mom, Aubrey Miles, real estate expert, Roy Golez, of Leechiu Property Consultants, and SMDC’s AVP for Architectural Design Management & Review, Cyrill Marzo. Hosted by Mica Pineda, only on SMDC’s Facebook page.

Pru Life UK launches critical illness protection plan for Filipino families

A first in the market to cover up to four family members in one policy

Leading life insurer Pru Life UK launches PRUHealth FamLove, a protection plan that shares the critical illness coverage to up to four family members in one policy, a first-of-its-kind product in the market. This is available for all Filipino families, including same-sex or common-law partners, parents, and adoptive children.

PRUHealth FamLove is a yearly renewable protection plan that provides long-term coverage until age 85 (applicable when the premium is continuously paid), against high treatment and hospitalization costs due to critical illness.

According to a 2019 study by Mercer Marsh Benefits*, critical illness cost in the Philippines is the second most expensive in South East Asia. Lung cancer treatment costs can lead up to Php 2.78 million, stroke is for Php 1.8 million, while a heart attack is for Php 980,000**.

Having critical illness protection is important as costs including long-term medication and care, and even loss of income can be covered by the plan’s critical illness benefits through the System and Organ Function Insurance (SOFI) concept. This feature makes the product unique in the market as it provides coverage should any major organs require surgery, without the need to remember the long list of critical illnesses.

PRUHealth FamLove is flexible and easy to avail as it comes in different packages, with the option to choose how many family members will be covered from one (self) to

three – mySelf, myPartner, myChild, myFamily, myParent – depending on what suits the family’s protection needs.

“Pru Life UK celebrates and nurtures every Filipino family of different types and sizes with PRUHealth FamLove. This protection plan focuses on their ever-changing needs by offering critical illness protection to the whole family,” shared Pru Life UK President and Chief Executive Officer Eng Teng Wong.

“This innovation is a solid testament to our continuing commitment to promote financial inclusion by providing protection coverage to millions of underserved and unserved Filipinos to get the most out of life,” Wong added.
