TheKoolPals Bar: Metro Manila’s newest entertainment hub merges stand-up comedy and live podcast recording

Monday, January 13, 2025

The KoolPals continues to spread the gospel of stand-up comedy with the launch of their newest entertainment and live podcast hub. The powerhouse comedy ensemble has officially unveiled The KoolPals Bar, a go-to destination for comedy fans who are looking for an exciting blend of live performances, interactive podcasts, and world-class dining.

For the folks behind The KoolPals, the concept of opening their own place has always been a dream. “Ever since we started our group, we have always dreamed of having our own bar,” admits James Caraan, one of the founding members of the group. “The podcast has played a huge role in promoting stand-up comedy, and it’s amazing to see how it has helped us achieve this dream. Now, we have a venue where we can expand our reach and share our humor with even more people.”

A Collective Vision

The KoolPals Bar isn’t just another comedy venue; it’s the realization of a collective vision by The KoolPals’ dedicated hosts and their loyal fans. Key to its creation was JJ Tan, the Managing Director of Century Park Hotel Manila, who helped provide the space to build this comedy sanctuary. Together with the five hosts of the acclaimed podcast, who have brought the comedy scene to new heights, the bar is set to become a place where both fans and comedians can truly connect.

“The fans who believed in us have been a major driving force in making this happen,” Caraan adds. “The KoolPals Bar is a place to showcase our comedy, where everyone can enjoy a laugh and experience something unique in Manila’s entertainment scene.”

The KoolPals Bar sets itself apart from contemporaries as it is the only venue in the Philippines that offers both a live podcast studio and a comedy bar all in one place. Guests will not only get to watch live recordings of The KoolPals, the popular comedy podcast, but they will have the chance to enjoy the best of local Pinoy stand-up comedy, featuring the genre’s finest performers.

“This is a comedian’s playground,” says GB Labrador, one of the pioneering members. “It’s a space where good food, drinks, and comedy come together. It’s where people can relax, laugh, and make memories.”

Partnership with Century Park Hotel Manila

Collaborating with Century Park Hotel Manila ensures that The KoolPals Bar provides more than just laughter and entertainment. The food and service meet international standards, delivering an unforgettable dining experience to complement the show.

Although The KoolPals is known primarily for stand-up comedy, The KoolPals Bar is setting the stage for a diverse range of comedic experiences. The venue has already launched a new format with the Noontime Show, airing every Sunday at 4 PM, filled with fun games and unfiltered humor. This show is also broadcast live via Facebook and YouTube, allowing fans worldwide to tune in.

Big Plans for 2025

Looking ahead to 2025, The KoolPals is gearing up for an exciting year. A nationwide tour will bring their live shows to cities across the Philippines, including Pampanga, Baguio, Cebu, and more. The tour will culminate in the recording of their very first comedy special, which they hope to stream on global platforms in the near future. As for the podcast, they are working on securing top TV comedians as guests in response to fan requests.

Apart from the tour, The KoolPals has teamed up with Arcade Film Factory, one of the leading production teams in the Philippines, to help create their first-ever comedy special. Directed by the award-winning Marius Talampas, the special will showcase the best of Filipino humor that could rival even their foreign counterparts.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Arcade Film Factory for this project,” shares Labrador. “They believe in our comedy, and with their expertise, we’re confident that our special will be not only funny but also world-class. This is just the beginning of what we hope will be a groundbreaking year.”

Reflecting on 2024, The KoolPals celebrate their growth from humble beginnings. Caraan reveals, “We started recording in a small room with equipment we bought from Raon. Now, we have our own studio and bar, which is a dream come true. Winning Spotify’s Best Comedy Podcast in the Philippines after over 750 episodes is another huge milestone for us. The community we’ve built has been incredible, and we’re excited to see where 2025 will take us.”

For The KoolPals team, the journey is just the beginning. “Whatever show you come to watch at The KoolPals Bar, whether it’s a live podcast recording or a stand-up show, it will always be funnier than the last one,” Labrador promise.

MONA releases debut EP Love, MONA: a modern take on love letters

Monday, December 16, 2024

MONA

Filipino recording star MONA has officially released her highly anticipated debut EP, Love, MONA.

Available now via Sony Music Entertainment, the 5-track release serves as a collection of love letters in the form of songs. Inspired by the tradition of exchanging handwritten letters in the ‘90s, MONA channels this intimate and personal expression of emotion into her distinct brand of storytelling.

“I was born in the ’90s and I experienced those handwritten letters, and I kind of miss it,” shares Mona Gonzales, the artist behind the moniker MONA. “Now, people rarely do that as we live in a digital world and everything is online.”

At its core, Love, MONA tackles love in varied forms, be it platonic, romantic, or self-love. It also doubles as a coming-of-age record, reminding listeners and fans of love’s transformative power, and how it shapes our identities and influences the stories we tell.

“I want the listeners to listen to each song from the album and find the ones that resonate with them,” MONA explains. “Each song represents a different emotional experience—whether it’s the excitement of new love, nostalgia, curiosity, caution, or the challenges of understanding oneself and others. I hope to take listeners on a journey through heartfelt moments, vulnerability, and self-discovery, all wrapped in catchy melodies and relatable lyrics.”

Musically, Love, MONA showcases the artist’s versatility, positioning her as a chameleonic figure capable of seamlessly navigating multiple genres and influences.

“Tayo Na Ba,” showcases MONA’s playful and dynamic vocal delivery, blending retro-futuristic production with early 2000s R&B, all while maintaining a distinctly modern OPM (Original Pilipino Music) sensibility.

“Lapit Sa Akin” and “Boy From The ’90s,” both produced by Peter Lamiel, reveal MONA’s impressive range. The former recalls the sounds of Japanese pop legend Utada Hikaru and early Robyn, while Lapit Sa Akin draws inspiration from a colorful era, offering infectious melodies paired with a summery, feel-good chorus.

One of the album’s standout moments, “Luntiang Mundo,” takes a reflective look at embracing our unique life journeys and finding joy in the simplest moments. The track revisits MONA’s guitar-driven pop sound but adds a dreamy, eclectic flair, thanks to production by South Korean producer J2. The result is a smooth, sensual vibe with a nostalgic touch.

Meanwhile, “Sandstorm,” a city-pop-inflected track produced by Jaxzmusic, blends groovy beats, funky instrumentation, and smooth rhythms, exuding confidence and a fresh, magnetic energy.

With Love, MONA now available, MONA looks ahead to her musical future with an eagerness to continue exploring new genres and styles. “I don’t know what the future holds for me, especially in this industry,” she reflects. “But I just do the things that I love most and enjoy it. My goal for now is to be recognized as a singer and songwriter. I’ll make myself ready for whatever this path may bring.”

As a debut album, Love, MONA marks an exciting new chapter for the rising P-Pop star, whose unique voice and genre-blending sound have already begun to carve out a place in the music scene. With her dedication to creating music that speaks to the heart, MONA is undoubtedly one to watch in the years to come.

Jolianne makes fun of her single status on the incredibly witty new track “Plain Girl”

Jolianne

Cebuana singer-songwriter Jolianne drops her new single, “Plain Girl,” a playful yet honest anthem that depicts the complexities of being a single young woman in a world full of love stories.

Released via Careless Music and Sony Music Entertainment, the track blends jazz-infused pop with a subtle touch of Disney-like whimsy, making it impossible to ignore.

With “Plain Girl,” Jolianne pokes fun of her own relationship status, waltzing into a narrative that speaks to the tiresome feeling of being lonely, inadequate, and overlooked. But instead of wallowing in self-pity or self-deprecation, the rising pop artist delivers a confessional with inescapable wit and lighthearted charm.

Jolianne explains, “I didn’t want it to come across as overly self-deprecating. Instead, I wanted it to sound like I was poking fun at my situation. This is why I paired the lyrics with dreamlike melodies and production.”

The song strikes a perfect balance between vulnerability and humor, with the soothing melodies contrasting sharply against the candid lyrics. Throughout the track, Jolianne’s natural charisma, paired with her impressive songwriting chops, shines in the dreamy lilt of lush instrumentation. She delivers a refreshing take on the “no-boyfriend-since-birth” (NBSB) narrative essentially like no other.

“Plain Girl” is filled with memorable lines that explore the frustrations and missed connection of navigating single life. One of the standout lyrics, “I want to be someone’s second to none, but it’s more likely I turn to a nun,” encapsulates the song’s raw honesty, a sentiment Jolianne feels deeply. “I think this line captures the balance best,” she shares. “It’s honest and a little bit cheeky, but that’s exactly how I feel.”

“Plain Girl” is produced by Jonah Bru and RJ Pineda, with vocal arrangement by Jolianne. According to the talented recording star, she wanted to embrace a whimsical and playful direction for the song, while highlighting her core strengths as a songwriter. The result is a lighthearted take on female solitude, but without being overly dramatic.

“Plain Girl” is the second single from Jolianne’s highly anticipated debut EP, set for release early next year. The upcoming EP will explore themes of yearning, love, and heartbreak, with the same mix of emotional candor and charismatic wit that makes “Plain Girl” so captivating.Jolianne’s “Plain Girl” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Careless Music and Sony. Alex Bruce and Zae celebrates women in hip-hop on joint track “A to Z (Drop It)”

women in hip-hop

Two of Filipino hip-hop’s promising stars, Alex Bruce and Zae, turn up the heat with the release of their collaborative single “A to Z (Drop It)”—out today via Sony Music Entertainment.

The fun, upbeat track marks a pivotal moment for both artists as they navigate a new chapter in their career, with Bruce preparing to turn 18 soon and Zae dropping her second track as an artist under AWAL. Together, they deliver another catchy R&B/hip-hop jam that embodies confidence, self-expression and femininity.

More than just a banger, the track is a declaration of empowerment. Featuring bold, sassy, and unapologetic vibes, “A to Z (Drop It)” is about “embracing who you are and owning your space,” shares Alex Bruce.

The collaboration exudes a natural chemistry between Bruce and Zae, two artists who hit it off instantly despite the material being their first joint. The song showcases the best of both worlds, blending their strengths and perspectives in one compelling package.

“Working with Zae brought a fire that matched mine, and together we created something that’s pure sassy, classy, nasty vibes,” says Alex Bruce. “This is us stepping up our game.”

Championing women in hip-hop

The song is a testament to the power of female solidarity in a genre often dominated by men. In the music video, the presence of strong women in Pinoy hip-hop is emphasized, including a special appearance by one of the heavy-hitting rookies in the game: Illest Morena. Inspired by the iconic dance movie, Step Up (2010), the music video revolves around the concept that women should be celebrated, and not pitted against each other.

“We’re not just here for the spotlight; we’re here to uplift each other and make sure our voices are heard,” shares Bruce. “In a space where women are often overlooked, we’re showing that we’ve got each other’s backs. Together, we rise and create a powerful statement of unity and respect.”

The music video was helmed by Louie Ong, a two-time MYX Music Award nominee. He brought the concept to life with dynamic cinematography and high-energy visuals, further enhancing its message.

The track also represents a breakthrough for both acts as they continue to challenge expectations and barriers in the Pinoy hip-hop scene. For Alex and Zae, this release is a declaration of their rightful place in a culture that is often slow to recognize women as key players.

“Women are often told to fit into certain expectations, especially in hip-hop,” says Zae. “With this song, we wanted to show that we’re more than just our image.”

“A to Z (Drop It)” is produced by Markbeats, a prominent urban producer who played a significant role in shaping the track’s overall sound and arrangement.

“He has always been a solid collaborator,” reveals Bruce. “He brought the energy we needed. His production really amplified the potential of the song and turn it into an anthem that hits hard.”Alex Bruce and Zae’s “A to Z (Drop It)” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment. Watch out for the music video to be released at 7:00 pm on her official YouTube channel.

KAIA, Subsonic Eye, Milledenials, Shaan & More Showcase Music Excellence & Regional Bonds at ASEAN India Music Festival 2024

ASEAN-India Music Festival (AIMF) concludes its biggest and most expansive edition held from November 29 to December 1, at the renowned Purana Qila in New Delhi, India, which offered free entry to all. Organized by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and Seher, the festival celebrates a decade of India’s ‘Act East Policy’, a comprehensive strategic partnership between India and ASEAN countries.

Drawing thousands of music lovers over three days, ASEAN-India Music Festival was a stunning tribute to music and its power to unite people from different cultures, and a display of world-class talent, which Hon’ble Minister of State for External Affairs, Mr. Pabitra Margherita, who inaugurated the event on its opening day as the Chief Guest, put succinctly, “ASEAN India Music Festival 2024 has shown how melodies can dissolve boundaries and foster connections that go beyond geography. Over these three days, we’ve celebrated not just the rhythm of instruments but the heartbeat of two regions bound by shared history and aspirations. The energy here at Purana Qila is a reminder that when art speaks, it unites us in ways words alone cannot. It has been an honor to witness this beautiful symphony of cultures.”

The third AIMF opened in grand style featuring captivating performances by India’s music icons Shaan and Raghu Dixit alongside ASEAN talents such as CHET Kanhchna (Cambodia), MRTV (Myanmar), and Buc Tuong (Viet Nam).

Day 2 delivered more electrifying performances on a global music stage, as India’s sensational pop duo Sukriti-Prakriti and indie pop-rock heroes Western Ghats brought dynamic energy to the ancient grounds of Purana Qila, while ASEAN artists like Floor 88 (Malaysia), Television Off (Thailand), and Tropical Hornbills (Brunei) proudly represented their vibrant cultures to the audience.

The final day saw award-winning singer-songwriter Jasleen Royal captivate the huge crowds with her performance. They were further treated to more remarkable acts from ASEAN, such as Subsonic Eye (Singapore), who delivered ethereal indie pop, while Milledenials (Indonesia) turned up the tempo with their infectious energy. TAIY AKARD (Lao PDR) and KAIA (Philippines) rounded up the incredible night, with their high-powered sets to conclude the 2024 edition of ASEAN-India Music Festival.

The festival was not only an occasion to hear great music, but it also played a vital role in connecting people from different backgrounds, Shaan—the “Golden Voice of India”—reflected, “Music is the heartbeat of humanity, and this festival showed us just how powerful that connection can be… sharing a stage with artists from ASEAN and feeling the audience's energy was surreal. Music really is a universal language, and tonight proved that beyond a doubt.”

Hon’ble Minister of State for External Affairs, Mr. Pabitra Margherita, inaugurated the event, highlighting the festival’s role in strengthening ASEAN-India ties through shared cultural bonds. He remarked, “This highlights the cultural bonds we’ve forged over the years. It’s a celebration of how music transcends borders, deepening our connections and strengthening the ties that unite ASEAN and India in our shared journey of growth.”

Sanjeev Bhargava, Director of Seher, echoed the sentiment, describing the event as “[representation] of the connections that grow from shared experiences, the relationships built over time, and the new ones that music helps create. By coming together to celebrate, we are fostering understanding and enriching the ties that bind our cultures."

We Are Imaginary marks new era as an indie rock duo with new single “Pinkish Hue”

Saturday, December 7, 2024

We Are Imaginary

The hypnotic track chronicles the slow deterioration of a love that was once vibrant and promising

After celebrating their fifteenth anniversary with the release of their fourth studio album, Swan Songs for Drifters last year, We Are Imaginary continues to evolve as a dynamic indie rock duo. Comprised of founding members and brothers Ahmad Tanji (vocals and guitars) and Khalid Tanji (guitars), the band remains steadfast in its commitment to crafting compelling, emotive music.

Reinvigorated by a streamlined two-member lineup and bolstered by a fresh group of collaborators, We Are Imaginary returns with “Pinkish Hue,” the first single marking a new chapter in their musical journey.

This hypnotic guitar-pop track blends shoegaze and ’90s alt-rock influences, imbuing their sound with dramatic flair. “Pinkish Hue” explores the slow erosion of a love once vibrant and full of promise, now fading—along with the memories it once held.

“I wrote the entire track,” Ahmad explains.  “It’s actually one of the leftovers from my previous project. When Khalid showed me an unfinished sketch with the same chord progression, it inspired me to present the song to the band. They immediately loved it.”

As a gifted singer-songwriter with an affinity for poetic melancholia, Ahmad paints the slow deterioration of romance with a bittersweet tone of a sunset: beautiful, yet fully aware that its end is inevitable. “You’re so far away,” he sings with resigned contemplation, while the thick, shimmering textures envelop the track, underscoring the sense of finality and longing.

The song’s vibrant, layered sound owes much to a team of all-star collaborators who brought the track to life. Producer and mixer Joey Santos and recording engineer Angee Rozul steered the song’s sonic direction, while drummer Jerros Dolino contributed dynamics, enriching the song’s moody, theatrical atmosphere.

“Trust was there, fueled by lots of caffeine and mutual respect,” Ahmad shares, when asked about being able to pull in some of the most notable names behind the scenes to work on their highly anticipated comeback. “They all were very much involved and open to whatever crazy ideas we have. It was just a smooth collaboration from the beginning.”

According to Ahmad, “Pinkish Hue” is part of a larger sonic vision the band is currently developing, and it will feature on their upcoming fifth album, slated for release in both digital and vinyl formats next year.

We Are Imaginary’s “Pinkish Hue” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via new indie label floppydisks.

The Itchyworms return to Japan for another leg of ‘Akin Ka Na Lang’ tour

The Itchyworms Japan Tour

Award-winning Filipino band The Itchyworms are set to return to Japan for another run of their critically acclaimed Akin Ka Na Lang… Japan! Tour in early 2025.

Following the success of their 2023 tour, the band will perform three shows from January 17 to 19, 2025, on iconic venues across Tokyo, including Mr. Back in Saitama, Heaven’s Door in Sangenjaya, and Gamuso in Asagaya.

“We’ve been fortunate to build a loyal fanbase in Japan over the years,” says Jugs Jugueta, lead vocalist of The Itchyworms. “It’s truly humbling to see fans traveling hours from all over Japan just to watch us perform. What makes the Japanese audience so special is their deep appreciation not only for our hits but also for the more obscure tracks. To them, it’s all good music.”

The Itchyworms, known for their blend of rock, pop, and humor, have long cultivated an international following. For this upcoming tour, the band promises a fresh setlist that includes more English-language songs from their early catalog, along with some unexpected surprises. “We used to have a lot of songs in English when we were starting out, and we also experimented with odd time signatures. We’re bringing some of those songs back for this tour, and I’m excited to see how the Japanese audience responds to this experiment,” says Jugueta.

Drummer and co-lead vocalist Jazz Nicolas also shares his admiration for the Japanese fans, noting that despite language barriers, music remains a universal connector. “Even if the audience doesn’t understand every word, the connection is still there,” he says. “It’s the music that binds us.”

Nicolas also reflects on a memorable moment from a previous Japan tour. “One time, I decided to surprise my bandmates by crawling on the floor and making weird noises behind a wall, just to startle them. To my surprise, it wasn’t my bandmates who walked in—it was the venue owner. He just smiled and said, ‘Aha! Crawling on the ground. Itchyworms.’ That moment has stayed with me ever since.”

Next year, The Itchyworms are set to expand their reach even further with more venues abroad. In addition to their Japanese dates, the band is planning tours in Europe, with a special focus on the UK, and new dates in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

With a career spanning over two decades, The Itchyworms continue to resonate with fans around the world, cementing their place as one of the Philippines’ most beloved musical exports.

The Itchyworms’ Akin Ka Na Lang… Japan! Tour 2025 dates:

• January 17, 2025 - Mr. Back, Saitama
• January 18, 2025 - Heaven’s Door, Sangenjaya
• January 19, 2025 - Gamuso, Asagaya

Jason Marvin reflects on healing and second chance in Rewritten Promise (Volume 2)

Wednesday, November 20, 2024

Jason Marvin

Jason Marvin has released his new album, Rewritten Promise (Volume 2) via Sony Music Entertainment.

The Filipino singer-songwriter’s new album brings to light the raw emotions of regret, growth, and the difficult path toward healing. With this poetic sequel to his debut album, Promise, Marvin closes out an old chapter of his life through songs of regret, letting go, and moving on, and sets himself for a new adventure armed with redemption and hope.

“This album is about changing of plans and expectations,” Jason Marvin shares. “Acknowledging that we have no control over destiny; we can make plans, set expectations, and even prepare for what’s ahead. But when life throws you an unexpected storm, you just have to hold on to who you are and trust in God’s faithfulness.”

The album was conceived during some of the darkest days of Marvin’s life, a time of deep reflection and self-discovery. While undeniably written from a place of hurt and woundedness, the songs also became his lifeline—an outlet for emotional release and a source of comfort as he worked through his struggles. The music allowed Marvin to reframe his perspective on life, spirituality, and love, ultimately setting him on a path toward recovery and renewal.

Collaborating with two distinguished producers—Nicholas Lazaro of La Balls Studio and Shadiel Chan of 9 Degrees North—Marvin’s vision for Rewritten Promise came to life through diverse creative influences. Lazaro, known for his enigmatic style, brought a distinct artistic touch to the album, while Chan’s expertise in creating soothing, atmospheric soundscapes further enhanced the emotional depth of the project.

Marvin reflects, “Working with Nick Lazaro was always a learning experience with the way he would suggest arbitrary elements and vocal harmonies for my songs that fits so perfectly. He was an older brother who knew his stuff through experience and guided me well. Working with Shadiel Chan is always a vibe. The coldness of Baguio, the quality of equipment, and Shad’s patience and lightness allows you to breathe and thus making the creative process so fluid. He’s someone you walk with side by side and together you discover how magical the output would be.”

Musically, Rewritten Promise explores acoustic folk sensibilities, woven together with lush arrangements and deeply personal lyrics. Marvin’s storytelling ability shines as he takes listeners on an emotional journey—from feelings of isolation to the catharsis of reconciliation and growth.

Jason Marvin explains his though process as a musician, and likens his process like that of a storyteller. “I usually love starting raw and simple. Setting up the listener’s ears for a whole range of dynamics, a simple acoustic guitar paints a picture of loneliness. From the first track of Mag-Isa being the denial stage, until the last tracks of Pwede Pala and Yaman being so grand with drums, strings, electric guitars—as the culmination of the album, I’ve always envisioned this album as a reflection of my thoughts, feelings, and experiences. It’s that personal to me.”

The focal track of the album, “Pwede Pala,” is a testament to Marvin’s newfound hope and optimism. In this powerful song, he confronts his past fears and hesitations, finding strength in the idea of second chances and the possibility of love after loss.

Heartbroken people would joke about love being fleeting—walang forever—but I refuse to believe that even in the light of my story,” he admits. “I’ve seen it with my parents. Marriages can work. Marriages can be flourishing even after 40 years. Marriages can survive storms when both parties are willing to fight for it.”

With Rewritten Promise (Volume 2), Jason Marvin emerges as an artist unafraid to confront life’s toughest moments, offering his audience not only an intimate glimpse into his journey but also a message of hope and resilience.

Jason Marvin’s new album, Rewritten Promise (Volume 2) is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment.

Denise Julia strikes new ground with charismatic EP, Sweet Nothings (Chapter 2)

Monday, November 18, 2024

Denise Julia

The 9-track record also features collaborations with Filipina R&B star DENȲ, Vietnamese-American star thuy, and R&B King of the Philippines Jay R

Denise Julia asserts her position as one of the most important voices in Filipino R&B with the release of her new EP, Sweet Nothings (Chapter 2), exclusively distributed by Sony Music Entertainment.

The 9-track release brings a new level of sophistication to her songcraft, touching on the familiar themes of her 2023 EP, while navigating wisdom and emotional honesty that go beyond her years.

“The stories are more real, the production has these rich new textures, and overall, it’s way more intimate,” says the prolific recording star. “This chapter is me opening up more about who I am, especially after coming out earlier this year. I think my writing’s gotten a little more reckless and freer—I’m just saying what I want to say without holding back."

Sweet Nothings (Chapter 2) embodies every aspect of Denise Julia: the real person stepping out of the limelight and online fanfare, stripped to the core with nothing but life lessons and bittersweet endings. On her latest EP, she candidly expressed the feelings of being vulnerable and in love, and putting on a brave face even when confronted by the difficult times.

Denise Julia's songwriting, characterized by unsparing confessionals that explore her sexuality and the messy nature of adolescent life choices, shines brighter this time around—a proof that there’s a silver lining in openness. In Sweet Nothings (Chapter 2), the R&B/soul vixen doesn’t pretend to have it all figured out, but she knows that through her storytelling, she would inspire more women and queer folks to go with their gut feel and embrace the love and respect they truly deserve.

“I wanted to capture those bittersweet moments of love and self-discovery—the real stuff we don’t always put into words,” DJ adds. “My inspiration was a mix of personal experiences, growing into myself, and just the feelings people keep bottled up but wish they could say out loud."

Denise Julia’s latest EP draws a lot from classic R&B but doesn’t shy away from embracing its modern edge. Whether it’s a sensual bop straight from the Aaliyah/Brandy playbook or a confessional ballad that reveals moments of unfiltered fragility, the B.A.D. hitmaker knows when to lurch forward or snap back with her chameleonic but sultry singing style. For this EP, she hones her contemporary R&B sound with touches of soul and pop, going for something that is both nostalgic and fresh.

Some of the highlights of the EP include the focus track “sweet nothings,” a collaboration with Jay R, the R&B King of the Philippines. Propelling the narrative forward with transcendent moments of harmony and sensual bliss, the song tackles the honeymoon-phase feeling in a relationship where everything feels so good that you don’t want to let go.

According to the ‘Patron Saint of Situationships,’ as the fans often call her, working with Jay R was a dream come true. “He understands R&B on such a deep level, and having his influence really elevated the song. I feel like if you told young Denise that she would collaborate with the King of R&B in the future, she would have never believed you, so this is such a monumental thing for me. He’s the best at what he does, and I hope to take what I’ve learned from working with him into my own craft.”

Other notable collaborations in the EP were the DENȲ-assisted “don’t matter,” which showcases the duo’s effortlessly sultry side while maintaining their individuality throughout the process, and “twin flames,” which features Vietnamese-American artist thuy. Denise Julia considers both artists an inspiration, with each adding their own flavor to the material.

Here is the track list for Sweet Nothings (Chapter 2):

1. better than he does
2. sweet nothings (feat. Jay R)
3. thinkin’ bout you
4. twin flames (feat. thuy)
5. (boy it’s just) attraction
6. inhibitions
7. bet
8. there’s no way you’d want me back
9. don’t matter (feat. DENȲ)

Denise Julia’s new EP, Sweet Nothings (Chapter 2), is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment.

Denise Julia is also slated to headline her solo concert soon! For future announcements and details, visit www.denisejulia.com.

JACOTÉNE drops electrifying new single and video 'Stop Calling'

JACOTENE

Rising sensation JACOTÉNE is back with her latest single and video, ‘Stop Calling’, a defiant anthem that explores the thrill of independence and self-assurance.

JACOTÉNE says of the track, “Stop Calling talks about a desire to break free from a toxic connection. The song is about the frustration and empowerment you feel in the face of a dishonest or manipulative relationship. It's a situation where you’ve given another person multiple chances, but the lies and manipulation continue. It’s a song about independence and a refusal to be drawn back into an unhealthy dynamic.”

JACOTÉNE continues to prove she’s a force to be reckoned with, bringing her magnetic energy and relatable storytelling to new heights. ‘Stop Calling’ is set to resonate with listeners everywhere, as it offers a liberating escape from old habits and toxic calls—literally and figuratively. This is the first track to come from JACOTÉNE’s upcoming debut EP to be released in 2025.

In the past year JACOTÉNE has played a string of festivals and live dates including her own sold-out headline show in the UK, a Sydney Opera House show for VIVID Festival as well as festival slots on Laneway Festival, Snow Machine, Wanderer, Changing Tides and St Kilda Festivals. She also supported G FLIP on their Melbourne and Adelaide tour dates, and Tems in Sydney and Melbourne.

Over the next few months, she will be playing in Germany, UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, as well as shows in Australia.

There are some voices that stop you in your tracks as soon as you hear them; voices with a triple-threat of power, beauty and uniqueness. JACOTÉNE possesses one such voice. It’s the kind that sounds instantly timeless and full of its own rich character and soul as she uses it to belt out big notes and softer, subtler moments.

Sean Archer explores complicated adolescent life in debut EP, BANDA KA NANG BANDA

Sean Archer

The EP was co-produced by Sean Archer with Rico Blanco, and was mixed by Angee Rozul

Sean Archer marks his official debut with the release of his first EP, BANDA KA NANG BANDA, under Sony Music Entertainment.

Named after a common phrase often alluded to passionate musicians whose connection with performing sees no limits, the title of the EP reflects the immediacy and grit of Sean Archer’s rock-leaning sound, drawing inspiration from his ‘90s grunge and pop-punk influences.

The multi-talented newcomer explains, "BANDA KA NANG BANDA talks about pushing through with your love of music despite the stigma it holds within our society, where people see music as a waste of time instead of a beneficial career or hobby. This record is very personal to me because it came from a place of confessional expression. I'm proud to have written songs that reflect my experiences as an adolescent in my early twenties, navigating love, sleep deprivation, band life, and interest in zodiac signs.”

Sean Archer co-produced the album with his mentor Rico Blanco, with award-winning record producer and engineer Angee Rozul taking over the mixing duties. The former also arranged most of the songs, going for a raw and heavy sonic direction that fits the current times.

Sean Archer revealed that he originally released three of the songs before deciding to re-record them with Rico and Angee. He re-recorded the other previously unreleased tracks, in separate sessions.

The young artist under Balcony Entertainment considers the recording process an “efficient” and memorable experience, where he admitted learning so much from his collaborators. For instance, he shares that he completed the vocals for three songs in a single day. "This was due to Rico's advice of not thinking too much about the process and just letting the magic happen. It was a new experience for me, and I immediately took on this new mindset as a musician.”

Standouts in the EP include “Puyat,” his breakout hit, which delivers three-chord menace with pop sensibilities; “Red Flag,” a soaring anthem that shows his more vulnerable side; “Patay,” a dynamic track filled with brash hooks and intense energy; and “Yayaman,” an ode to youthful recklessness and drunken passion. The EP’s focus track “Ms. Zodiac” continues his coming-of-age journey with a burst of romance, wrapping up the 6-track release on a high note.

Taken as a whole, BANDA KA NANG BANDA is a remarkably restless work that strikes a balance between emotional tenderness and intensity. The writing, as expected, is manic and unapologetic, but never loses its sense of truth and youthfulness—a commitment that makes his new record all the more human.

Sean Archer’s debut EP, BANDA KA NANG BANDA is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment.

Phum Viphurit Goes Deeper into the World of Paul Vibhavadi in “Balter Baby”

Wednesday, October 16, 2024

Phum Viphurit

After surprising fans with his story-driven conceptual single “The Other Side”, Bangkok-born singer-songwriter Phum Viphurit goes even deeper into the world of his alter ego Paul Vibhavadi on “Balter Baby”, the second single from his upcoming EP PAUL VIBHAVADI VOL. 1. Released to streaming platforms on October 9, 2024, this dance-oriented piece is Phum’s first instrumental-only track that showcases another side of his musical tastes and capabilities. An animated music video for “Balter Baby” by Shea Oracheski and James Bedggood based on Phum’s concept will also debut on the official Phum Viphurit YouTube channel.

In terms of narrative, “Balter Baby” picks up just before where “The Other Side” left off, in which the lovable sloth Paul Vibhavadi is grappling with his newfound adulation amongst a sloth-worshipping tribe he stumbled upon during his journey in search of the magical forest of Himmapan. “I wanted to expand on a part of the previous music video when it shows the tribe worshipping him, almost like an Ari Aster, Midsommer-type dance,” says Phum. “So it’s showing Paul in the trance of that, what he was feeling in that dance sequence.”

Intriguingly, Phum opted to convey this chapter of Paul’s story via an instrumental track with no vocals, once again pushing the boundaries of his music in the process. “I’ve done instrumental-heavy music, but always with glimpses of my voice. This one’s purely for people to dance to,” says Phum. “Honestly, if you go through the last fifty of my liked Spotify songs, I would say 45 of them are instrumental music. When I’m looking for inspiration, I try to write lyrics over pre-existing instrumentals, and I wanted to deconstruct that method by, ‘Hey, what if I can capture someone’s attention or move their head along to this three-minute house track that’s guitar-based with some synths?’ It was an interesting challenge, but also fits within the theme of the story.”

Regarding the specific influences for “Balter Baby”, Phum says, “I listened to a lot of Modjo, a dance group from the 2000s. I also listened to a lot of Seventies Motown, funk and disco. But most of it was led by the visual, because I directed the ‘The Other Side’ music video and was pretty heavily involved in the animation process for the ‘Balter Baby’ video. So I was thinking of Paul’s story and what particular soundtrack would suit this scene.” Indeed, the music of “Balter Baby” perfectly complements the video that takes us into Paul’s mind as his immersion into this new world that has embraced him sees him grooving along like a retro dance video game character.

The choice of “Balter Baby” as a single also further emphasizes the boldness of Phum Viphurit’s exploration on the PAUL VIBHAVADI VOL. 1 EP, while still making sense within the context of the project. “I felt like it was going to introduce a new house-inspired song like ‘The Other Side’, I needed a bit of a continuation before I break from that tempo and texture, so ‘Balter Baby’ was the most natural selection to me,” he says. “It’s like, ‘Hey, it’s not just a one-off thing.’ I’m playing with the idea of trance, movement and motifs throughout the whole EP.”

The end of the “Balter Baby” video sees Paul Vibhavadi enclosed in a glowing orb as he floats away from that tribe, and the audience is free to draw their own conclusions – or look for more answers when the PAUL VIBHAVADI VOL. 1 drops on October 17. “I know it’s quite a conceptual piece of work, and there’ll be many different interpretations of it,” says Phum. “But I’m so excited to show my creativity and make people feel something again with this next piece of work.”
