Dedicated to being a part of every Filipino household, PHILUSA Corporation marks its 65th year by championing hygiene, health, sustainability, and giving back to the communities. The leading company commenced the anniversary campaign by supporting Luwalhati ng Maynila, a home for the aged in Marikina City. MILO® Philippines partners with moms in energizing kids back to school

Monday, October 10, 2022

As the new school year begins and millions of kids are now eagerly getting ready to go back, excited to see their classmates and teachers again, breakfast champion MILO® Philippines is on a nationwide tour to remind moms and kids about the importance of needing nutritious, energetic start every day. This has been especially challenging for students have been forced to adapt to online learning just a couple of years ago.

As families start adjusting again for face-to-face classes this year, MILO® Champions are going across the country through the “Back to School, Back to Sports” program, visiting different barangays to help jumpstart their mornings with nutritious energy. In partnership with the LGUs, with the support of sports offices, volunteers from CSOs, and DepEd, each trip is designed for kids to learn more about different sports and teach them how to have an active lifestyle after being mostly at home for the past two years.

Trusted health experts have also tagged along to give moms free nutrition training and teach them how to prepare a nutritious breakfast for their kids so that they can stay energized when they go to school and when come back home.

"It is crucial that parents continue to make sure their children consume a balanced diet. A healthy breakfast gives kids the energy they need to fuel their daily activities and start the day off right. According to research, it can boost children's cognitive abilities, such as their memory, alertness, focus, and problem-solving skills, and help them perform better in reading, math, and science tests,” said Ann Cayetano, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.

Most recently, karateka and SEA Games gold medalist Jamie Lim guested in the South Luzon leg where she introduced basic karate movements to over a hundred kids. “Being active in sports at a young age taught me many life lessons that helped me excel in and outside the classroom like the value of girt or pagpupursige. It’s been such an amazing experience to be here with our next generation of Champions, helping kickstart their school year on an energetic note and showing the possibilities that sports can offer them as they go back to face-to-face classes,” said Lim.

Marathon runner Rio de la Cruz also joined to teach them the importance of doing regular physical activities. He also explained how staying energized and daily exercise can help them do better in school.

“The physical benefits of being active and the valuable lessons it teaches goes a long way in helping our kids show grit, or to be pagpupursige. As a young student athlete, drinking MILO after my early morning training sessions helped give me the nutritious energy I needed to fulfill my academic and athletic responsibilities. Now, as a parent, I’m proud to work again with MILO® in giving my fellow moms and dads the tools they need to continue their kid’s Champion journey during the new school year,” said Coach Rio.

Committed to guiding kids on their Champion journey, MILO® Philippines also continues to recognize the important role that both moms and dads will forever play in ensuring kids success in and beyond the classroom. Integral in that effort are partnerships with experts in nutrition who can equip parents with the tools and information they need to continue keeping their kids energized at school and when they go back home.

“Together with our partners, we are excited to welcome kids back to school and re-introduce them to sports. For some, it’s been years since they’ve had a chance to go outside and engage in physical activites. Through this program, we hope to help kids start living an active lifestyle because, when paired with the nutritious energy of MILO, it adds to their holistic development,” said Sam Ching, Assistant Brand Manager, MILO® Philippines.

Be on the look out as your barangay could be the next stop in the MILO® Philippines “Back To School, Back To Sports” takover. Visit the official MILO® Philippines website to know more about MILO® sports programs and stay updated with all the latest news and announcements.

Power lies in the plate

Sekaya and endurance athlete and coach Ige Lopez share how good nutrition affects athletic performance

Athletes are considered as the prime examples of peak health. They are more than fit, some even showcasing extraordinary strength, endurance, and speed that can go beyond human expectations. But even the fittest athlete may be facing a health concern or two. Most common of which are nutrient deficiencies, as physically active people require more nourishment to support their high-intensity activities.

Sekaya, the Filipino plant-based brand under Synnovate, the natural products division of UNILAB, and endurance athlete and coach Ige Lopez tackle the close connection between athletic performance and nutrition. Good nutrition plays an essential role in an athlete’s overall health and even in the prevention of injuries and illnesses. It’s a core foundation that helps improve any sport player’s performance.

“It’s important for athletes to consult nutritionists so they would have an idea on what to eat before a workout, during a workout, and after a workout to make sure they have enough of the nutrients they need to sustain their training and prevent deficiencies,” Coach Ige says. “Pre-workout meals provide fuel for hard or long workouts. What they eat during training is crucial in sustaining their energy. Post-workout meals are also a must as these help with recovery.”

Apart from macros like protein, carbohydrates, and fats, some of the nutrients that athletes need to meet the physical demands of their sports include the following:

Iron, a common nutrient deficiency among female athletes because of their monthly period, is essential in carrying oxygen to the muscles. Iron deficiency can cause fatigue and affect performance. Potassium is a type of electrolyte that plays a critical role in hydration, which is important for athletes who sweat a lot during training and competitions. Having potassium deficiency can reduce energy and endurance. It can lead to muscle weakness, cramping, and rapid heart rate.

Magnesium is a mineral that can help muscles relax after working out. Strenuous activities raise magnesium needs by 10-20%, studies have shown. It’s also significant in maintaining bone health. Zinc is most known for supporting the immune system. This is especially crucial for athletes who may miss training or may be asked to sit out if they have a viral infection or illness. It’s also a vital micronutrient in promoting wound healing.

To help athletes excel and get proper nutrition, Coach Ige suggests eating everything in moderation, sticking to three big and well-balanced meals a day, and fueling their body with real or whole foods.

“I would advise athletes to eat good carbs from dark leafy veggies and keeping their plates colorful. For snacks, it would be nice to have a combination of fats, carbs, and proteins. Sourdough with olive oil and romaine lettuce and cheese would be a good example. Adding a piece of meat would also help,” he recommends.

For those who want something sweeter, they can go for plain yogurt, bananas, raisins, almonds, and chia seeds topped with honey. If they have injuries, Coach Ige says it’s best to have more protein sources like lean meat, fish, nuts, and ligaments or litid for collagen, as these will provide nutrients for healing. Those craving for snacks can grab some popcorn, veggie sticks, peanut butter, and fruits.

Coach Ige also proposes doing batch meal preps on weekends for athletes who don’t have the time to focus on their meals during weekdays. He adds that they can also whip up easy salads by keeping healthy ingredients like romaine lettuce, cucumber, bell pepper, carrots, tomatoes, onions, and garlic on hand with apple cider vinegar and extra virgin olive oil for making a healthy dressing.

When needed, they can turn to supplements like those offered by Sekaya. The brand offers a roster of high-quality

plant-based products that can support an athlete’s health goals and daily wellness. Each product is carefully created in a way that’s easy to include in their daily routine. The carefully curated Sekaya Raw Actives, a line up of nutrient-dense, ready-to-mix superfood powders, can support our daily nutrition requirements and fitness goals. Simply mix with water or any favorite drink, or sprinkle it over dishes. Sekaya Pea Protein is a favorite among athletes as it provides 18g of clean, plant-based protein in every scoop. It is also very easy to integrate into recipes such as pancakes and overnight oats for a healthy power breakfast as well as post-workout smoothies.

Athletes and active people push their bodies to their limits, so it’s crucial for them to be mindful of how they fuel their bodies. They should have a variety of whole foods that can give them enough vitamins and nutrients for better health, performance, and recovery.

Sekaya is a Filipino plant-based brand that provides natural, science-backed products to support your health goals and daily wellness. Emirates takes home three honors at the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2022

Wednesday, October 5, 2022

Emirates has taken home three awards at the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2022, including World's Best Economy Class, World's Best Economy Class Catering, and for the 17th consecutive time, World's Best Inflight Entertainment. The awards are a testament to the airline’s commitment to offering the very best customer experience in the sky, where travelers in Economy Class can look forward to spacious cabins, carefully crafted menus, an unmatched range of in-flight entertainment choices, thoughtful amenities like kids toys, and much more.

At a time when cost-cutting has become the norm, the airline is making long-term investments to further elevate its product and service strategy in every cabin class.

This latest recognition from Skytrax comes on the heels of the airline’s recent announcement that it is investing over US$ 2 billion to enhance its inflight customer experience. This includes one of the largest retrofit projects in aviation history spanning 120 aircraft which will soon sport the airline’s latest interior concepts, a new hospitality-focused service delivery model, and best-in-class product enhancements across all cabins, starting this year. Emirates will also be investing over US$ 350 million in next-generation inflight entertainment systems with Thales for passengers to experience the airline’s massive library of 5,000 channels on high-definition screens, along with a host of other high-tech features on its incoming fleet of A350 aircraft.

Customers flying Emirates’ Economy Class, no matter where they choose to travel on the airline’s 130 destination strong network, can look forward to a menu infused with regional and seasonal flavors, featuring hearty main dishes and sides, and an indulgent dessert inspired by their destination. Emirates also prides itself in celebrating unique cultures and traditions from around the globe by offering signature dishes for occasions like Diwali, Christmas, Ramadan, Eid Al Adha, Lunar New Year and more recently, Oktoberfest and Onam.

Emirates offers one of the most comprehensive and state-of-the-art entertainment and communications services in the skies. ice, the inflight entertainment system awarded by Skytrax for the 17th time this year, offers over 5,000 channels of entertainment, with 4,000 hours of movies and TV, and close to 3,500 hours of music and podcasts. Customers can also choose content in 40 languages. In addition to entertainment, Emirates ice offers a range of other useful features, such as: the ability to check the status of your flight; a real-time view of the sky during take-off and landing from cameras fixed on the aircraft’s nose, tail and underbelly; EmiratesRED; the world’s first inflight TV shopping channel and LIVE TV.

ice is also the only inflight entertainment system that offers exclusive programming from Shahid, with over 135 hours of highly popular Arabic content across 15 shows, with more to be added in the coming months. Emirates was the first airline in the region partner with HBO Max, offering exclusive hits only offered through the streaming service.

Emirates’ on board product experience is complemented by the airline’s cosmopolitan team of cabin crew who hail from over 130 nationalities. Crew members, already trained on providing the very best inflight service, are further levelling up their hospitality experience through a rigorous training program that was designed in partnership with Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne. The latest program is focused on mastering the four service pillars: Excellence, Attentiveness, Innovation and Passion.

Driving radical changes in the customer experience also includes small touches that make a big difference, not only for customers but the planet as well. Economy Class customers can snuggle up in warm and soft sustainable blankets made of 100% recycled plastic bottles. The airline also offers sustainably-made amenity kit bags for Economy Class customers on select long haul flights, which have been newly redesigned to represent the four elements - fire, water, earth and air, as a reminder of the careful balance required to preserve for the future of our planet. The kit’s travel essentials - socks, eyeshades, toothbrush and tooth paste, as well as bookmark, are all made from environmentally-friendly materials and come in natural earth tones.

Little flyers traveling across all classes can also keep busy with special plush toys and blankets as well as a selection of ‘fly with me’ belt bags, duffle bags and backpacks. All children’s items and toys have been consciously made of 100% recycled raw materials including drinking bottles, and swing tags use non-toxic soy based ink printed on recycled cardboard.

On the ground, Emirates has been working hard to create a smart contactless journey for its customers. Travelers can choose to use its integrated biometric path in DXB to check in for their flight, complete immigration formalities, and board their flights. Customers can also use the airline’s touchless self-check-in and bag drop kiosks at Dubai International (DXB).

The smart contactless experience continues on board with digital menus available on the Emirates app, and customers can also use the app to create a preferred playlist for ice.

At present, Harvey is handling the accounts of Lenovo, RHEA Generics, and Theo & Philo chocolates, alongside his lead role in COMCO SEA's Corporate MARCOMAX (Marketing, Communications, Advocacy and Excellence) initiative. For his outstanding works, Mr. Llamosa has been recognized in MarCom Awards in USA, Marketing PR Awards in Singapore, PR Awards Asia in Hong Kong, and Quill and Anvil Awards in the Philippines, to name a few.

“I am so glad that I was given the opportunity to be part of COMCO Southeast Asia, with them I was able to learn from the experts of the industry and create wonderful and meaningful campaigns. With this new role, I will do my best to continue giving valuable contributions to what we consider as our life’s work,” said Mr. Llamosa.

Mr. Llamosa and Mr. Recio were both pioneers and members of the 1st Cycle of the Camp COMCO Mentorship Program. As proof of the Camp’s success, the 2nd Cycle no doubt produced another homegrown talent, Queenie Resmundo.

Queenie Resmundo

Ms. Resmundo graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. She started as a Production and Administration Associate and is now promoted to Public Relations and Communications Administrator Pro Tempore and Brand Communications Manager. She is also a lead in stakeholder relationship management through COMCO SEA’s MEXINAC (Media, Experts, Influencers, Activators and Communities) program.

Throughout her work journey, Ms. Resmundo managed accounts such as Electrolux, United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA), Angkas, Oakley, Reef, Eastern Communications. Her latest clients include Takeda, Philusa Corporation, and JobStreet. Ms. Resmundo has won awards from the Quill Awards, Anvil Awards, Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards, Stevie International Business Awards, Marketing Events Awards, and ASEAN PR Excellence Awards. Some of her award-winning projects include Eastern Communications’ 140th Anniversary campaign, “Eastern Link VIP Club”, “First Connections are the Strongest: Connecting Filipino People Amid the Pandemic”, “Eastern Home: Connecting Filipinos in the Social Distancing Era for Innovation in Consumer Products & Services”, JobStreet’s “The Future Workforce: JobStreet’s Find the Job You Love” and the “#TogetherAhead: JobStreet’s Response to the COVID19 Impact” campaigns.

“It's not every day that a company invests in its people to help them learn and expand their skills, and I have always been grateful to COMCO for believing in me since I started and allowing me to grow. I am excited to contribute to the company's continued success and looking forward to sharing more meaningful stories with the team,” said Ms. Resmundo.

Patricia Raña

Finally, there is Patricia Raña, a graduate from the University of the East, the 9th Cycle of Camp COMCO, and now one of the Agency’s most trusted Corporate Services Unit members. She has been promoted to Special Assistant to the Comptroller and Senior Corporate Services Officer.

Ms. Raña joined COMCO SEA in 2018 as a Finance and Administration Associate and has always been the best in handling the Agency's business processes, finance and administration matters. Moreover, she supports the growth of COMCO SEA’s corporate culture and team camaraderie through her work in the Agency Culture and Team Development (ACTDEV) special project.

“I want to express my gratitude to COMCO Southeast Asia as I truly value their support and encouragement. I'm grateful for the opportunity to advance my skills and grow with our company and I look forward to the new challenges and opportunities this new role provides and continue to work hard for the team,” said Ms. Raña.

The COMCO SEA team could not be more proud of these immensely talented people. Promotions may be common occurrences in the workplace, but not every day one sees a team member be so dedicated and grow together with their company.

“Harvey, AC, Queenie, and Pat all started as Camp COMCO apprentices at COMCO SEA. Now, they are experts and full-fledge deputies in their respective fields. They’ve grown so much in just a short span of time, so the word ‘proud’ is definitely an understatement of how I feel towards their progress. There’s still a lot in store to make their careers flourish, and I am excited for what they will make of themselves next,” said Corporate Services Director and Comptroller, Ms. Joan Maslang.

"As a hands-on leader of COMCO Southeast Asia, I have had the great pleasure of training and working with our most valued apprentices and witnessing them turn into rock stars of the industry! And for them to obtain the positions and recognitions they have now as well as grow in their craft and in their life as a whole, is my greatest honor, the best award I have ever received. To Harvey, AC, Queen, and Pat, I want you to know that your success, your growth, have always been part of our vision and you will always have our back as you continue in your journey. Never stop making us proud and being inspirations to our next in line in #ourCOMCOsquadron and in championing our brand of #MeaningfulStorytelling,” said Mr. Bondoy. MILO® Champions shares unique stories of pagpupursige that lead to their lifelong success

Thursday, September 15, 2022

MILO® Philippines has extended its partnership with Jamie Lim, Coach Rio de la Cruz, and Japoy Lizardo. Adding another chapter to their years-long relationship, the beloved nutritious beverage brand is excited to tell each Champion’s unique story of pagpupursige that will inspire the next generation of young athletes to persevere in their own Champion journeys.

Breaking stereotypes

Being the daughter of a professional basketball legend and growing up in a family of athletes, it seemed destined for Jamie to become a star karateka. However, from an early age, her father and mother - a seasoned lawyer - taught Jamie the importance of choosing her own path and instilled in her the belief that she can always be more than your stereotypical jock.

Choosing to not limit herself, Jamie decided to pursue goals in both sports and academics. The journey was not without its challenges as she had to learn how to balance her many responsibilities as a student while keeping up with the discipline of an athlete.

“I remember, in my preparation for the SEA Games in 2019, I only had 5 months of real training as I was already in the last months of my senior year. On top of that, I was out of Karate for 4 years so training was twice as rigorous. Although it was difficult, I could power through it because I knew the stakes were also high,” shared Jamie.

With her family’s continuous support, she was inspired to break past the mold and prove that she can indeed excel on and off the mat. Still, one of her proudest achievements was winning a gold medal in Karate during the 2019 SEA Games and graduating Summa Cum Laude in UP Diliman with a degree in BS Mathematics. Today she is focused on furthering her studies in London while awaiting the start of training for the next SEA Games in 2023.

“Coming from being a part of MILO® AAK and now with my extended partnership with the MILO® family, I hope to inspire kids faced by the same barriers as mine to be brave in breaking out of those stereotypes and paving their own paths. Their time to prove themselves will come,” added Jaime.

Running through life’s obstacles

Before Coach Rio became an international marathoner and one of the top running coaches in the country, his road to success was paved from humble beginnings. Coming from a big family that struggled in putting food on the table, Coach Rio sorely lacked the financial support that most young runners his age needed to pursue a professional career.

At times, all young Rio had was an unwavering pagpupursige and discipline - and that was enough. He never once missed training, even on the days he had no running gear or equipment, and learned early on that he needed to work thrice as hard to achieve his one clear goal: to be a successful athlete to provide for his family.

“One time when I was in elementary school, there was a trial race that I really wanted to join. Ang kaso sabi ng coach ko noon, hindi ka pa ready - pero makulit ako. I still showed up during the competition day and patiently waited. Buti na lang, one athlete didn’t show up so my coach gave me a chance. I proved to him that I deserved it by winning it all,” shared Coach Rio. That win opened the doors for Coach Rio’s future sports success.

“Time management and determination were key for me. Even when I was young, my life was all about school and training. I knew what I wanted and was focused on my goal despite knowing that it would come with many sacrifices,” emphasized Coach Rio.

For Coach Rio, being a part of the MILO® Philippines family has played a huge part in his grit journey. From joining the MILO® Marathons and using his winnings to support himself in school to now being the main organizer for all their events nationwide and a familiar face in the new MILO® TV commercial, it has come full circle. He continues to help pave the way for aspiring young athletes hoping to succeed in sports the same way he did.

Molding the next generation of athletes

Japoy started his journey in sports at a MILO® Sports Program. At just 12 years old and known as the teenage heartthrob whose face was on every MILO® pack, Japoy recognized the responsibility he had as thousands of other kids were aspiring to be just like him. This became an important driving factor for Japoy to pursige in succeeding in Taekwondo.

Since he wasn’t as tall or built as other athletes his age, he struggled to put on the required weight for his category but persevered and worked twice as hard to develop his techniques. He turned his height and weight into an advantage that allowed him to create his signature “Spinning Kick” move that earned him the nickname “The Spinning Kick of Asia”.

Now at 36 and a professional coach himself, Japoy uses this experience to shape the next generation of strong-willed athletes and giving them a platform to become an inspiration for the generation after them. In this extension of his partnership with MILO®, Japoy also aims to share this with more kids nationwide. “Although not all athletes are born gifted in a sport, they are molded through the years with experience and the right pagpupursige to succeed. That’s how strong athletes are created,” said Japoy.

The MILO® Champions have come together to inspire kids as they continue their Champion journeys. Their unique stories of pagpupursige also show that the values learned from sports can lead to success.

“We’re happy to extend this partnership with Jamie Lim, Coach Rio, and Japoy Lizardo. We believe that they each have personal stories that will inspire many young athletes today to pursige in achieving lifelong success just like they did. As one MILO® family, we are proud to give them a platform that allows them to do just that,” said Veronica Cruz, MILO Business Executive Officer, Senior Vice President, Nestle Philippines, Inc.

Together, MILO® Philippines calls on moms to join the MILO® Champions in building pagpupursige within their children through sports. To know more about MILO® sports programs, please visit the official MILO® Philippines website.
