mWell unites hundreds of doctor-volunteers, mental health experts, and health-conscious Filipinos on National mWellness Day

Last August 27-28, Metro Pacific Investments Corporation’s (PSE: MPI) mWell, the Philippines’ fastest-growing health app, made history by gathering hundreds of doctors, medical specialists, and mental health experts to give free online consultation and sound medical advice to patients and health-conscious Filipinos from all over the country.

National mWellness Day, mounted for the 2nd time since its inception in 2021, has achieved a milestone in its mission to bring quality healthcare to more Filipinos nationwide in the new normal by providing free online consultation to hundreds of patients from all over the country through the mWell PH app.

The two-day advocacy event was helmed by hundreds of family doctors and specialists from Metro Manila, Cagayan De Oro, Davao, and Zamboanga who donated their time to provide consultation via the mWell app, while mental health advocates from MindNation and Makati Medical Center Wellness Center gave on-call services for free mental health counseling.

Dr. Reymark Calma congratulated mWell for the event which allowed him to feel the true spirit of volunteerism while fellow volunteer, Dr. Mark Calban said, “It was such an inspiring experience serving the medical needs of patients not only from Metro Manila but from different provinces.” Expressing her appreciation for the support she received, Dr. Mae Doctolero, said, “The responsive tech team and operations support made everything so easy.”

A record number of patients, including celebrities, Metro Manila-based journalists and regional influencers were able to consult for free. After the consultation, they also received free e-prescription, medical certificates, lab referrals and vouchers.

Patients expressed gratitude for the free consultation. They found the doctors to be very kind and approachable. “The consultation flow is good and clear,” said one of the patients while another writes, “This is the best teleconsultation I have experienced.” An mWell user who had a consultation with the dermatologist gave this feedback: “My doctor is amazing. She was on time and provided me with all the support.” A mom whose daughter had fever was so thankful that they could consult a pediatrician for free. She said: “Laking tulong para sa mga nanay na tulad ko. Ang daling gamitin at ang bait ng duktor. Buti na lang may mWell app!”

mWell partners, including the country’s top insurance companies – PhilCare and Generali gave their full support for the advocacy along with Makati Medical Center Foundation, MPIC Foundation, Unilab, MedExpress, 24 Alkaline-C and PiCur antioxidant.

At the same time, mWell provided free consultation to residents of Barangay Lumutan, a remote community in General Nakar, Quezon through mWell OnTheGo, a portable digital clinic. The mWell OnTheGo bag was filled with a tablet and a phone preloaded with the mWell PH app containing a health passcode for free online consultation. Foldable solar panels, batteries, and Smart pocket wifi were donated to enable the residents to consult anytime.

National mWellness Day supports the MVP Group’s Gabay Kalusugan advocacy focusing on quality and affordable healthcare. MPIC President, Chairman and CEO, Manny V. Pangilinan says, “Filipinos now have better access to healthcare through mWell’s integrated digital healthcare ecosystem with a wide and sustainable network of medical experts and services.”

For Chaye Cabal-Revilla, Chief Finance, Risk and Sustainability Officer of Metro Pacific Investments Corporation, sustainability is the backbone of the work done across the group. Cabal-Revilla says, “Being able to serve Filipinos nationwide is at the heart of what we do in mWell. That’s why we dedicated two days working with volunteer docs and partners to provide consultation for free. As part of the MPIC Group, mWell is committed to work towards the achievement of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being.”

Alex Bruce showcases her versatility as a singer-rapper on R&B-leaning single “Ayoko Pa”

Friday, September 9, 2022

Over slick beats and boppy melodies, the young Filipina artist expresses her decision to take her time before entering in a relationship

Alex Bruce flexes her versatility in “Ayoko Pa,” a top-tier R&B jam produced by frequent collaborator Cursebox.

Over a bed of slick beats and boppy melodies, the 15-year-old artist calls out her suitor for coming off way too strong, and emphasizes her decision to wait for love at the right time.

“It’s a song that expresses my stand on not being ready for a commitment,” says the trend-setting singer-rapper. “I know my priorities, and I don’t reject people just because I don’t feel a connection or synergy. It’s just that I’m too young to enter into a relationship that would easily fizzle out.”

Reiterating her right to be treated with respect, the music virtuoso from Batangas sees this aggressive action as a red flag for most women. Bruce reflects, “Sometimes all it takes is knowing when to take a hint. When someone says no, learn how to respect the decision and back off.”

The release of “Ayoko Pa” is accompanied by a colorful visual that showcases Alex Bruce’s stand on prioritizing life outside of a romantic relationship. Starring rising rapper Benedic Fragata and TikTok personalities Yvon and Achi, the music video also introduces Bruce as an all-around performer, vibing in seamless choreography.

“I’m also very much involved in the creative aspects of the video,” shares Bruce. “It’s a collaborative process to begin with, and it helps that everyone on the set really gave their all. Props to the director, talents, and crew behind this production.”

Alex Bruce’s “Ayoko Pa” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment. Watch the music video here.

SM Prime and WWF Philippines partners toward responsible reporting on climate change solutions

Thursday, September 8, 2022

SM Prime Holdings, Inc., one of Southeast Asia’s leading integrated property developers and leading conservation organization World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines have entered a collaboration in adopting a more robust reporting framework to address the climate crisis.

This is a major partnership of WWF with a Philippine company towards developing a bespoke program for decarbonization.

Sustainability at SM Prime is at the core of its corporate identity. SM Prime is at the forefront of spearheading sustainable practices and setting records in pioneering programs to consciously protect the environment and strongly focus on resilience in its developments.

Under the partnership, SM Prime will adopt the Corporates for a Better Planet Initiative (CBPI), WWF-Philippines’ flagship program that provides an actionable framework for organizations to operate sustainably within the paradigm of the climate crisis.

“We are delighted to work with WWF Philippines on this sustainable journey. Focusing on sustainability within the context of the Philippines ensures that our strategies and projects are highly material, efficient, and more responsive in addressing local concerns surrounding resilience and adaptation. We need to be one with the worldwide community to achieve this and work with global experts to get this right,” SM Prime President Jeffrey C. Lim said.

Climate change is one of the most pressing and defining global issues today. The Philippines currently ranks third globally when it comes to climate change vulnerability. With its geographical location, it is more exposed to altering intensities of climate change manifested through erratic weather systems and natural calamities.

These risks are complex and uncertain, and organizations typically fail to properly assess their implications. The CBPI program takes a holistic approach to this pivotal issue, addressing these risks from a custom-built, science-based perspective.

By partnering with the WWF, SM Prime can enhance and determine climate change solutions that will be reflected through responsible and transparent reporting.

The first phase of CBPI involves gauging where SM Prime stands in its sustainability initiatives and setting a science-based target in line with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels. SM Prime published its first Integrated Report in 2021 under the Integrated Reporting Framework which provides an overview of our value creation model — how we seek to create value for our stakeholders by contributing to national progress through investments and interventions critical to the country’s socio-economic growth.

As a champion of climate action in the Philippines, our partnership with WWF adds another enhancement to transparent reporting by ensuring greenhouse gas (GHG) computations are accurate and use appropriate methodologies.

With the need to broaden efforts to protect the environment, this partnership forms part of group-wide efforts under the SM Green Movement that aims to improve the quality of life of communities through sustainable solutions to promote a green planet, green living, and a green culture.

SM Prime’s partnership with WWF dates back to 2007 under Hamilo Coast, its leisure resort development in Nasugbu, Batangas.

WWF closely monitors the health and viability of the Hamilo Coast area including three of its coves designated as Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)—the Pico de Loro, Etayo and Santelmo.

In recognition of its conservation efforts, Hamilo Coast was cited by WWF-Philippines as its longest-standing Sustainability Partner in 2020.

Four possible reasons you have achy joints

Wednesday, September 7, 2022

Pain, pain go away

LifeFood Curcumin from luyang dilaw can provide natural pain relief

Our joints allow our bodies to move in ways that allow us to do the simplest of actions like walking or typing on our phones and computers and perform complicated motions such as those required in dancing and playing sports. Unfortunately, this crucial role of our joints in movement means they are subjected to continuous wear and tear, so it’s no surprise that we sometimes feel like our ankles, wrist, or knees are hurting.

In addition to the usual wear-and-tear, joint pains can also be caused by repetitive use in sports or certain tasks at work, structural problems like osteoarthritis, or inflammatory conditions like gout or rheumatoid arthritis. LifeFood, the natural food supplement brand of UNILAB, lists some common conditions that could make our joints creak and ache.

Osteoarthritis. Getting older is one of the factors that causes joint discomfort, especially in the areas that bear the brunt of our weight, like the hips and knees. The gel-like protective cartilage that helps support and cushion the joints and bones can break down over time due to constant wear and tear. This condition is called osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease and affects millions of Filipinos.

Gout

Gout is another cause of joint pain: uric acid crystals accumulate in the joint space causing damage and inflammation. This condition is greatly affected by one’s lifestyle: eating too much protein like red meat, drinking alcohol or sugar-loaded drinks, especially those with high-fructose corn syrup, dehydration, and being overweight are among the factors that lead to increased uric acid levels. Certain types of medications can also increase one’s chances of getting gout and experiencing joint pain. Considered one of the most painful types of arthritis, gout symptoms include pain, swelling, and redness of the joint or joints; typically, the first attack happens in the big toe.

Rheumatoid arthritis

Another type of inflammatory arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disorder wherein the immune system attacks membranes around the joints. It’s characterized by tender, swollen joints and feeling stiff in the morning. It can also be accompanied by fever, tiredness, unexplainable weight loss, or loss of appetite. In addition to affecting the joints, rheumatoid arthritis can also affect the skin, lungs, and heart.

Old injuries

Old injuries, especially in the tendons, ligaments, or bones, can also cause joint pain, which can sometimes become chronic. In addition, trauma to a joint can change its biomechanics and structure in ways that make it more prone to increased wear and tear compared to a non-injured joint.

Whatever the root cause, joint problems can be debilitating: the limitation of movements keeps us from doing our jobs or tasks, and the pain impacts our quality of life. Internal medicine specialist and functional medicine practitioner Eca Lorenzo, MD, FPCP shares that there are different ways to address joint pain depending on its cause, but managing inflammation is an important part of treatment.

“Whatever the cause of joint pain, there is usually inflammation involved; that’s what causes the pain. Inflammation is our body’s natural response to injury or infection and is part of the healing process. But, unfortunately, it can become chronic, and when that happens, it starts to cause damage instead,” Dr. Lorenzo explains. “We can curb chronic inflammation by living a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise and following a diet loaded with colorful fruits, vegetables, and whole grains rich in nutrients and antioxidants.”

She adds that one of the foods people with achy joints can turn to is turmeric, also known as luyang dilaw. “Turmeric contains curcumin, a well-researched chemical for its anti-inflammatory properties and known for reducing joint pain and swelling. In addition, various studies have shown that it benefits those with diseases caused by some inflammation like arthritis,” the doctor points out.

One of the products offered by LifeFood is LifeFood Curcumin, which has a concentrated dose of curcuminoids extracted from turmeric. Considered a natural pain reliever, it comes in a capsule form that can be taken 2-3 times a day or as directed by a health professional. Unlike the usual luyang dilaw offerings in the market, LifeFood delivers 29x better absorption through a technology that ensures the body gets the optimal effects in every capsule.

Joint problems, in some cases, may be inevitable, but the pain that comes with it is highly manageable. With a healthy lifestyle and solutions like LifeFood Curcumin, we can get relief from pain so we can move more and live life to the fullest!
