Safe seating, safe home: Top factors to consider for ensuring furniture safety in your household

Monday, April 24, 2023

When it comes to ensuring safety in the household, many homeowners focus on aspects such as fire safety, electrical safety, and emergency preparedness. While these are undoubtedly essential considerations, another area that is often overlooked is the role of furniture in keeping everyone in the house safe and sound – away from potential harm and accidents.

Have you ever considered that household furniture such as TV, chest of drawers or even a chair can be dangerous – especially to your children?

In line with its thrust to provide the best quality products and meet the desire of the consumers for durable and value-for-money household items, Uratex Monoblock launched its "Bawal Ang Marupok" campaign to educate and equip every homeowner to be keen and discerning towards investing in furniture - particularly in plastic chairs which are considered one of the essential and popular household items found in most Filipino homes and establishments.

Looking for Monobloc Chairs? Here's What You Need to Know to Make the Right Choice

Monobloc chairs are typical in homes, buildings and various indoor and outdoor spaces. They are affordable, easy to use, and quickly moved around, making them a smart choice for seating solutions. However, not all monobloc chairs are created equal. While they are generally durable and long-lasting, some common problems can arise. To ensure safety, Uratex Monoblock shares the top 3 essential factors that homeowners and entrepreneurs should consider before purchasing a monobloc chair:

Durability

Monobloc chairs are designed to be lightweight, stackable and easy to move. However, as you use them over time, they can become vulnerable to wear and tear, cracking, or breaking which can be considered a safety hazard.

There are a wide variety of plastic chairs available but looking at the quality of the material and how they are being made is essential to ensure that they are long-lasting and can withstand the test of time. Chairs made from cheap, low-quality plastic may be more prone to breaking, so it is ideal to ensure that the monobloc chairs have undergone the proper testing and inspection before being released to the market. It is also best to go for well-known and established brands with a reputation for producing high-quality products.

Seatload Capacity

Monobloc chairs have weight limits that vary depending on their design and construction. Chairs with higher weight limits are generally more durable and sturdy. Additionally, it demonstrates its quality by carrying a substantial amount of weight or impact without breaking, which is crucial for chairs subjected to everyday use.

Be sure to check the weight capacity of the chair you are considering through its seat load warning label to ensure its stability – preventing you from tipping off and encountering severe injuries, particularly for your kids.

Certification

Industry certifications ensure that products meet specific quality standards and have been tested and approved by credible independent third-party organizations. With this, customers may be guaranteed that the monobloc chairs are good quality and safe to use without any risks.

For homeowners, it provides assurance that their loved ones are safe using a certified, high-quality chair. In addition, this allows entrepreneurs to meet regulatory bodies safety standards by providing their customers and employees with durable and safe day-to-day monoblock chairs.

Now, as regular consumers, how will you know a monobloc chair's durability, capacity, and certification? All you have to do is check the warning sticker of a monobloc chair!

The Uratex Monoblock chair has the highest seat load capacity on the market at 200kg. To prove this and its durability, each chair has undergone a series of tests before being released to the public as part of the rules and regulations established by the Department of Trade and Industry - Bureau of Philippine Standards (DTI-BPS).

Among the tests executed are the Chair Fatigue, Breaking Point, and the Chair Drop – designed to assess the durability and safety of each Uratex Monoblock chair.

With this, Uratex Monoblock is the first brand in the Philippines to pass the country's highest plastic furniture standard, Level 5 of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) - ISO 7173.

Taking precautions when selecting household or commercial furniture is essential since making the wrong choice might result in accidents and injuries. Furthermore, the lifespan of a product is determined by its quality, which means that a less-priced option may be more expensive due to several replacements. Always look for a chair's durability, capacity, and certification to guarantee overall safety.

Do your laundry more efficiently with these three easy breezy steps

Thursday, April 20, 2023

Filipino moms are always meticulous regarding their families’ welfare and cleanliness. They ensure the home is spotless and clean and the food they put on the table is nutritious and healthy. When it comes to laundry, they tend to put extra care into ensuring clothes are just as immaculate and smell fresh all day.

Most moms heavily rely on powder detergent, which uses the traditional babad and kusot method before putting it in the washing machine. While it mostly gets the job done, it, unfortunately, consumes most of their time and prevents them from spending bonding moments with their family because of its tedious nature.

Nowadays, modern Filipino moms continue to look for faster yet more efficient ways to get their laundry done so they have more chances to do other household chores, devote time for self-care or enjoy quality moments with the family.

DOH launches multi-sectoral initiative to eradicate tuberculosis

The Department of Health (DOH) has launched the Philippine Acceleration Action Plan for Tuberculosis (PAAP-TB), a multisectoral initiative to eradicate tuberculosis (TB) in the country by 2035. The DOH together with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), and Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), through the PAAP-TB aims to provide wider access to health services, and improved education and public information, social protection, and labor protection to eradicate TB by 2030.

Tuberculosis is a chronic communicable disease that comes second only to COVID-19 as a leading cause of mortality from a single infectious organism. According to the Global TB Report 2022, the disease accounted for 1.6 million deaths in 2021. In a preliminary report from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) this year, TB ranks 11th among the causes of death in the Filipino population.

TB elimination entails improving access to TB services and addressing the social, economic, and physical determinants that significantly affect its occurrence, transmission, and even treatment. “In addressing these social determinants of health, we enjoin all our sectoral stakeholders for synergistic solutions to overcrowding, low education, malnutrition, and ultimately poverty. Our collective interventions will make TB services equitable, especially for the poor,” said Officer-in-Charge Secretary Dr. Maria Rosario Singh-Vergeire.

The PAAP-TB aims to address the nation's TB epidemic by re-examining current programs and initiatives of National Coordinating Committee for Tuberculosis (TB-NCC) member organizations. Together, these collaborating sectors will provide an action plan and involve the private sector and organizations to achieve the program's goals over two medium terms.

Also present at the event were representatives from various sectors committed to eradicating TB in the Philippines, Department of Health Assistant Secretary Beverly Ho, DILG Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr., DSWD Assistant Secretary Janet Armas, DOLE Executive Director for the Occupational Safety and Health Center Ma. Teresita Cucueco, and FDA Director IV Jesusa Joyce Cirunay.

“By engaging multiple disciplines, organizations, sectors, and partners can combine strengths and leverage resources, expertise, and knowledge, while addressing the social, environmental, economic, and political systemic drivers that influence behaviors and prevent the effective delivery of health policies and interventions,” said Officer-In-Charge Singh-Vergeire.

The PAAP-TB document has been developed with technical support from the USAID’s TB Innovations and Health Systems Strengthening Project implemented by FHI 360.

Asialink taps UBX for digitalization of finance business

Friday, April 14, 2023

UBX, the leading open finance platform in the Philippines, has been named the official technology partner of Asialink Finance Corp., one of the leading non-bank financial institutions in the Philippines that provides secured business loans, and personal financing and refinancing products nationwide, as it expands and improves its suite of financial services for the benefit of millions of Filipinos.

Under the agreement, UBX will support Asialink in digitally transforming its lending processes via UBX SeekCap and its payment collections, enabling it to expand the reach and operational efficiency of its already lucrative lending business.

“UBX and Asialink share the same goal of driving financial inclusion not only for individuals but also for growing businesses. Through this partnership, we will co-create various digital financial solutions that are sustainable and inclusive, promoting economic growth and recovery in the long run,” UBX Business lead for Lending Magelllan Fetalino said.

Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) make up around 99.51 percent of all businesses in the Philippines. Traditionally, these businesses have no access to financing to grow due to the stringent requirements imposed by banking institutions. The partners aim to further democratize access to this financial tool to empower small businesses to accelerate their growth and contribute even more to the economy.

The UBX and Asialink partnership will simplify the processing of business loans through a digital platform, cutting down the costs and lead approval time for loans. At present, most banks provide a minimum approval time of 30 days, with high-interest rates and burdensome requirements which are designed to discourage lenders from availing loans.

“Asialink’s vision is to be at the forefront of the financing industry, by providing inclusive financial access to MSMEs and their Communities, in the Philippines and Asia, a goal that we share with UBX. By providing accessible, fast, and convenient loans which will be powered with UBX’s technologies, we are several steps closer towards achieving our goals as strong government partners for economic growth, while making a positive impact on the lives of Filipinos both in the country and abroad,” said Eillen B. Mangubat, President and COO of Asialink Finance Corporation

In 2022, UBX doubled down on collaborations with various players in different industries such as the metaverse, insurance, the women’s sector, and even government institutions to advance its goal of including everyone.

“Our strategy is to join hands with like-minded organizations to advance our goal of inclusive finance. As the country’s leading open finance platform, we are always on the lookout to partner with companies–and recently, even government institutions–which aim to shape the future of finance and sustainability,” UBX President and CEO John Januszczak.

1. Killers (2010)

This romcom opens in one of the most beautiful places on earth: Nice, France, where the rich frolic on the beaches and arrive on private jets and yachts. With its red-roofed villas, a palm-tree lined boulevard, boutiques, cafes and restaurants, Nice attracts holidaymakers from all over the world. Including assassins. Starring Ashton Kutcher (That ‘70s Show, The Ranch) as assassin Spencer and Katherine Heigl (Grey’s Anatomy, Knocked Up) as lovelorn woman Jen traveling with her well-off parents, the film shows that je ne sais quoi that makes it easy to fall in love with and in Nice.

Spencer gets tangled up in a mission to kill while Jen tries to untangle herself from her protective and overbearing parents (played by the legendary Tom Selleck, and Catherine O’Hara of the Home Alone franchise). The moment she meets him, shirtless and with that boyish charm, Jen is smitten. The two go on a date, and even before the aperitif Spencer remotely blows up a helicopter. They fall in love and we flash forward to the American suburbs three years later.

They are now married and Spencer is retired from the killing business. Unfortunately, someone has put a $20 million bounty on his head and suburbia is never the same again. If the couple thought the neighborhood block party was annoying, they’re in for the big surprise as unassuming neighbors turn out to be assassins trying to kill him.

2. Green Book (2018)

Green Book is a biographical film starring Viggo Mortensen (The Lord of the Rings) as Italian-American bouncer Tony Lip and Mahershala Ali (House of Cards, Luke Cage) as the pianist Dr. Don Shirley, inspired by the latter’s 1962 tour of the Deep South. The movie is a road trip drama set in the Jim Crow south.

The “Green Book” refers to the annual guidebook for blacks traveling through the United States. It is a directory of safe roads, motels, restaurants, and gas stations in segregated America. Tony Lip is hired by Don Shirley, a black man, to drive him on his eight-week concert tour with plans to return to New York City on Christmas Eve. A friendship grows between the two men as Don helps Tony write love letters to his wife in the Bronx, as well as details of their trip, which become some of the basis for the movie.

The movie captures the zeitgeist of a segregated America in the 1960s. Lip’s transformation begins as he sees how the other side lives. And while the landscape is beautiful, there are heart-wrenching scenes of racism, hatred, and violence that black people suffer in the hands of white people.

3. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012)

It’s the end of the world and Dodge Petersen (Steve Carell, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Despicable Me) is unhappy. Penny Lockhart is unhappy (Keira Knightley, Begin Again, Love Actually), too. Dodge’s wife has left him while Penny’s boyfriend has made her miss her last opportunity to go back to England and be with her family.

After Penny accidentally spills that his wife was having an affair, Dodge tries to kill himself by guzzling window cleaner but wakes up in a park with a dog tied to his foot. The two strike a deal: Dodge would connect her with someone who can fly her to England while she would help him find Olivia, his high school sweetheart and the love of his life.

Dodging madmen, riots, and an assassin — and everything else that make people crazy at the end of the world—they locate Penny’s ex-boyfriend, a doomsday prepper that lets her contact her family in England with his satellite phone. They also arrive at Olivia’s home but find it empty. Here, they fall in love and figure out their feelings for one another — all as the asteroid makes its inevitable impact.

4. Travel Stalker

Travel Stalker is a Japanese series whose hosts connect with travelers with no plans and hang out with them for the day. Call it innocents abroad, if you will. Each episode features different tourists, locations, shopping areas, food, and adventures.

In the first episode, they go to Nara, Japan’s first capital city, where they feed deer and visit the Todaiji Temple. Episode 3 in Inari is a special one featuring the Fushimi Inari Shrine. Throughout the 10-episode season, viewers get to see places like Shinsaibashi, which is famous for its shopping district, a marathon, temples, sunsets, how Osaka looks in autumn, Kyoto, Arashiyama, and Sagano.

This travel series is useful inspiration for when you’re going to a place (whether international or domestic) without much of a real plan. And if you’re actually headed to Japan — or impulsively made plans for later in the year — Travel Stalker is a great guide for making your DIY itinerary.

5. 2 Days and 1 Night (2007-present)

Two days and one night is usually how long a quick break goes. But what if you had to perform tasks to earn points for things like food during this short time? That’s exactly what the South Korean reality show is all about.

2 Days and 1 Night, now with four seasons available to stream on Viu, features a cast of six men that have continually been replaced by new ones since it first aired in 2007. They travel throughout South Korea and deal with unpredictable situations and severe environments. It’s a cheerful way — because the hosts definitely are — to see South Korea from your couch or to base your travel plans on when you visit.

Be inspired for your next trip or travel vicariously to these destinations while at home through your PLDT Home subscription. Start streaming on Lionsgate Play when you activate your complimentary access voucher until June 1. For Asian content, subscribe to Viu Premium for only P80 a month and charge it straight to your PLDT Home account. To find out, visit pldthome.comentertainment.

P-Pop star MONA recalls memories of being a fan on new single “Tagahanga”

MONA Tagahanga

“Tagahanga” is produced by K-Pop/P-Pop producer OhWon Lee and written by MONA herself.

Filipino singer-songwriter MONA channels the inner thoughts of a fan girl on “Tagahanga,” her official second single under Sony Music Entertainment.

The song tells the story of a passionate fan who rallies around her idol, hoping to connect with them in a meaningful way and get noticed. It was also penned by MONA herself, who admitted that her experiences as a fan inspired the storytelling.

“To an extent, I’d say that these memories come from a place of love and adoration,” MONA shares. “I took the experience to heart when I decided to start a career in music, because at some point in my life, I know how it feels to be a fan.”

On “Tagahanga,” the promising songstress transforms her positive energy into a euphoric pop anthem. She delivers the material produced by K-Pop/P-Pop producer OhWon Lee with a balance of introspection and enthusiasm, singing as if she’s fully committed to the essence of the narrative.

“The producer prominently highlights the bass and guitar parts, creating a driving rhythm that encourages dancing and movement,” the Always Remember act adds. “This, in turn, sets the tone of the track, adding a layer of fun and excitement.”

MONA recently joined Sony Music Entertainment’s esteemed roster of P-Pop talents, which also includes KAIA, Fourth Impact and SB19 among its lineup. With more than 18 million followers on TikTok and a growing portfolio as an influencer, the breakthrough artist hopes to conquer the local music scene with her vocal abilities and solid pop instincts.

MONA’s new track “Tagahanga” serves as a follow-up to her debut single “Always Remember,” a song that values the importance of self-worth and preservation in facing one’s fears.

MONA’s “Tagahanga” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment.
