Asia’s biggest dog show is back at the Big Dome

PCCI’s Philippine Circuit to be held on January 12 to 15, 2023


After being sidelined for the past two years as a result of the pandemic, the Philippine Circuit, an annual event organized by the Philippine Canine Club, Inc., showcasing some of the best purebred show dogs all over the world is back at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. 

The long-awaited event will run from January 12 to 15, 2023. During those four days, 15 prestigious shows will be staged, each offering its awards at stake.

  1. Specifically, the event is composed of the following:Four (4) CACIB Shows with one doubling as a Crufts Qualifier Show, and one doubling as a Philippine Winner Show. 
  2. Four (4) Asia Pacific Champion Shows
  3. Four (4) South East Asia Champion Shows
  4. Three (3) Philippine Derby Winner Shows which are integrated within the 3 CACIB Shows
On its 8th edition, the Philippine Circuit has attracted the most number of entries since it was started. There will be a total of 8,412 entries for this edition, 5,892 from the Philippines and 2,520 from a total of 16 countries. Of the total foreign entries, 56 % are from our neighboring countries in Asia, like Thailand, Korea, and Indonesia, 38% from Europe, and 6% from the USA.

Heading the prestigious 17-man panel of international judges is Mr. Tamas Jakkel from Hungary, who is presently the President of the FCI or Federation Cynologique Internationale, the ruling organization for national kennel clubs in the world.

This edition of the Philippine Circuit will be doubly interesting as it is the kick-off event for PCCI’s 60th Anniversary celebration.

During the event, the PCCI will launch its commemorative coffee table book “60 Years of Purebred Dogs in the Philippines, the PCCI Legacy.” This limited edition book showcases the purebred dogs that made their mark in the country and the various personalities that shaped the purebred dog fancy into what it is today. Another highlight during the event will be a short program that will formally introduce to the public the Philippine Forest Dog or “Asong Gubat” which will hopefully be the first FCI-recognized dog breed from the Philippines.

UnionBank techs up youth, professionals for the future of work with its Data Science Program


Union Bank of the Philippines (UnionBank), through its Artificial Intelligence and Innovation Center of Excellence (AI & Innovation CoE), co-created a Data Science Development Program with the goal of educating students and young professionals on data science, in line with the Bank's "Tech-up Pilipinas" advocacy that promotes improved literacy among Filipinos when it comes to technology.

The XCELLERATOR Data Science Development Program is a six-week course, free of charge to all who would participate, designed with the goal of introducing and empowering learners on data science foundations and principles. The program involves a series of hands-on learnings, live remote mentoring through intervention sessions, and a final requirement of a capstone project that participants will need to submit, present and defend. Exemplary participants may qualify for an internship opportunity at the AI & Innovation CoE.

"The field of Data Science and AI is brimming with opportunities with its diverse applications across functional areas and industries," notes Dr. Adrienne Heinrich, UnionBank’s AI and Innovation CoE Head. “The XCELLERATOR Data Science Development Program is designed to instill a data-driven mindset among the participants and build their Data Science and AI capabilities that can be applied to address real-world problems and unlock new opportunities."

The program has four modules that offer a holistic view of data science. Foundational Topics include refreshers on statistics, algebra, calculus, and guides on frequently used programming languages in data science. Meanwhile, Data Analytics and Preparation provides an overview of a typical data science project, specifically detailing business problem formulation, data processing, data extraction, database management, exploratory data analysis, and web scraping, among others.

Machine Learning Techniques details the aspect of machine learning in data science projects and how predictive analytics can greatly benefit organizations, and includes technical knowledge on machine learning techniques such as supervised and unsupervised machine learning. Finally, Data Science Applications highlights the importance of data science portfolios and projects, data storytelling and visualizations, AI ethics, and the potential business impact of having analytics projects in an organization.

The program was launched in February and was completed in two batches. The first batch, which lasted until March, was composed of UnionBankers, employees from other units of the Aboitiz Group, and students from Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, and University of the Philippines. The second batch, which was done from May to June, involved students from the Asia Pacific College (APC).

The program was a huge success, having a satisfaction rating larger than 4.5 (out of 5) among the participants, with a total of 261 participants completing the program. A third batch was launched this November 2022, with more program runs to be offered in 2023.

Additionally, successful graduates of the program have the option to join UnionBank as interns, which can help them advance their career and their learning experience, and even potentially be able to work with the Bank in the future.

SM Investments Group brings the climate conversation to the homefront

 

World leaders recently gathered in Egypt for COP27 to push forward on the global initiative to deal with the climate crisis. As the world population hits a record eight billion, the stakes are higher to ensure a sustainable and resilient future for the coming generations. With the Philippines being a staunch supporter of the 2015 Paris Agreement and committed to reduce local GHG emissions by 75% (mostly conditioned on external aid to cut emissions), SM Investments Corporation recently convened the “Sustainability Forum PH 2022” at the Conrad Manila in Pasay City. In partnership with WWF Philippines, they are rallying the business community to be “United for Climate.” 

Mr. Frederic DyBuncio, President and CEO of SM Investments highlighted the Filipino’s capacity for sustainable growth. “As the world approaches the tail end of the pandemic, businesses are optimistic about sustaining the post-pandemic rebound. While this positive outlook may result in better conditions for businesses and the job market, we need to take a broader view of our resilience strategy if we are to bounce back better for the long term,” he pointed out. The key to this success will be economic and societal resilience, learning from the disruptions caused by the pandemic, and putting in place plans for the sustenance of the national environment. 

With the Philippines straddling the Typhoon Belt,’ there is a pressing need to swiftly implement a climate mitigation roadmap. Aligned with the discussions at COP27, Mr. DyBuncio highlighted “the need for a robust ecosystem to sustain developing countries through the devastating impact of climate change.” And this is where the SM Group is focusing their forward-thinking initiatives. As he presents it, “We have ingrained resiliency in our culture – dedicating 10% of our capital expenditure or CAPEX to incorporate disaster resiliency and sustainability in our infrastructure designs, equipping our people and communities in disaster preparedness and advocating for disaster resiliency among local governments and international communities.” The conglomerate’s property arm, SM Prime Holdings, Inc. is leading the charge within the group. 

Looking beyond SM’s campaign for a more sustainable future for the Filipino people, Mr. DyBuncio outlined the need to correct the perception that global issues only have a limited or isolated impact to a Philippine context. Climate change is not one of them – as it increases the “risk of biodiversity loss, natural resource crisis, and human environmental damage.” The SM Group hopes to play an important role in curtailing “the devastating societal impacts that will weigh heaviest on the most vulnerable of communities.” At the core of this is signing on to the Task Force for Climate Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), where SM will be “assessing its risks and taking practical steps to reduce its impact by shifting to renewable energy sources to power its operations, among other actions,” he noted.

“We urge that we look at our climate agenda through the lens of the Philippines’ agenda and the realities that Filipino businesses and local communities face every day,” Mr. DyBuncio said. As the prime movers continue to shape the Philippine economy, the goal is to also change the Filipino’s future and its people into a more climate-resilient one.

Meralco is back-to-back champion of X-Trash Challenge

 

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has once again emerged as the champion in an inter-company competition that aims to promote responsible waste management in the country.

The power distributor bested 12 other Philippine companies in this year’s X-Trash Challenge organized by the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) and Basic Environmental Systems and Technology Inc. (BEST, Inc.).

The competition, which ran from April to September 2022, involved the collection and donation of recyclable waste materials such as paper, metals, and plastics—all of which had equivalent environmental points that were converted into cash.

Other participating companies included BDO Unibank, Inc., Accenture, Inc., Smart Communications Inc., PLDT Inc., Deloitte Philippines Outreach Inc., Dole Philippines Inc., and Standard Chartered Bank Philippines among others.

With the proceeds of its win, Meralco donated 1,000 food packs to the beneficiaries of One Meralco Foundation, the company’s social development arm, through the Ateneo Center for Education.

“We share this award with our logistics teams and pollution control officers for their all-out support to this relevant sustainability program. They are the ones who drove the diligent efforts to collect and segregate our recyclables and deliver them to the warehouses of PBSP and BEST, Inc., as we strived to achieve our waste diversion targets for 2022,” said Antonio M. Abuel, Jr., Meralco Vice President and Head of Facilities, Safety, and Security Management, during the awards ceremony.

Last year, Meralco was also awarded as overall champion of the first X-Trash Challenge, topping 13 other firms. Funds raised were used to donate over 200 food packs to marginalized families in Imus, Cavite, Makati City and Muntinlupa City, in partnership with the Samahan ng Nagkakaisang Pamilya ng Pantawid.

“Our second straight win in the X-Trash Challenge is a testament to our deep commitment to sustainability exemplified, in part, by our Race to Zero Waste (RZW) Program. We, in Meralco, took this Challenge to heart not only because of its close alignment with RZW’s thrust, but also because of the value it delivers to recipient communities,” said Raymond B. Ravelo, Meralco First Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer.

Race to Zero Waste Program is a company-wide initiative covering all Meralco facilities, aiming to minimize waste generation and reduce waste disposal in landfills.

Our Disney pals could not be more excited to see all of our wonderful guests again! Everyone from Mickey Mouse, and the Marvel Super Heroes to Duffy and Friends—including their newest pal, the lovable fox LinaBell—have prepared brand-new surprises to celebrate special occasions while creating precious memories along the way.


There is more to capture at “Follow Your Dreams” where Mickey Mouse and an array of Disney characters, including Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Goofy, Pocahontas, Moana, and Elsa, as well as Miguel from Coco and Nick and Judy from Zootopia. So, savor the magic with Disney Pals through a series of iconic new photo moments.


Exciting product line-up in 2023 at Hong Kong Disneyland


2023 is bound to be a magical and memorable year with a rich line-up of immersive activities and seasonal events at the resort, from celebrating the 100th anniversary of Disney to the long-awaited opening of the first-ever Frozen-themed land in the world, World of Frozen, in the second half of 2023. What’s more, a brand-new Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse statue will be unveiled the same year.
