HSAC Techs Up with UnionBank's UPAY for digital settlement of fees

The Human Settlements Adjudication Commission (HSAC) has signed a memorandum of agreement with Union Bank of the Philippines (UnionBank) for a partnership that will allow HSAC to digitize the payment of fees for its services. The signing ceremony took place last November 23 at the HSAC Office in Quezon City.

Through the agreement, HSAC will utilize UnionBank's proprietary payment platform UPAY to help digitize the settlement of fees for those who avail of the agency's services. This makes transactions easier and more convenient, and is a milestone in the agency's ongoing efforts to transform digitally.

UPAY by UnionBank is a platform that brings together various payment methods together in one place, giving users access to a wide selection of payment options available today. These include payments through the UnionBank Online mobile app, InstaPay, debit and credit cards, digital wallets, and over-the-counter payments through official partners, to name just a few.

"It is now time for HSAC to give its stakeholders a faster and simpler method of paying their legal fees with only a few clicks," said HSAC Executive Commissioner Atty. Melzar Galicia.

"Through UPAY, HSAC hopes to provide stakeholders a quicker and more convenient way of paying the required legal fees for their cases with HSAC," said HSAC Commissioner and Adviser of TWG for Digital Transformation Atty. Sergio Yap II.

"We are delighted to introduce this newest service to you through which HSAC litigants can now pay their legal fees conveniently right on HSAC's own website," said UnionBank EVP and Transaction Banking Head Mon Duarte. "This partnership is in line with UnionBank's mantra of 'Tech-up Pilipinas' where we seek to make banking enjoyable and safe through digital for all Filipinos."

Folk-pop artist syd hartha links up with hip-hop sensation kiyo on new single “3:15

The release of the track comes with a music video about basking in the comforts of a safe space

Acclaimed singer-songwriter syd hartha puts her eclecticism on full display with the release of her new single "3:15"—out today via Sony Music Entertainment.

The song finds the young, multi-talented artist collaborating for the first time with hip-hop star kiyo while expressing her complicated feelings towards someone who isn't perfect by any means but is certainly important in her life.

"3:15 is about how someone feels wrong but feels so good at the same time," explains the folk-pop artist. "I always try to convince myself that someone or something won’t always be good to me, but for some reason, I end up giving in."

The title of the track was derived from the coincidental reflections that happen during the dark, witching hours of the morning when one gets stirred from slumber and wakes up searching profusely for answers and signs.

The ayaw act adds, "It was supposed to just be temporary, until I realized that the title shares a connection with the lyrics: that specific time can also symbolize trying to make the most out of the dark."

For his part, Filipino rapper/producer kiyo drops some smooth, delicate verses that complement the track’s honest depiction of fallibility, which to some extent, mirrors the moments when a narrative becomes looser and moodier as it reaches the lateness of the hour. As kiyo puts it, "anino sa paligid, may gustong sabihin / dami ng mga mata, bakit ‘di marinig" is a line that keeps one awake, with complicated feelings of desire and danger crawling in the same sentence.

The release of "3:15" also comes with a music video helmed by Raliug of Lunchbox Productions, with a concept by Pau Tiu. According to the filmmaker, the visual material encapsulates the perfect visualization of what the song is about: basking in the comforts of one’s safe space, which is considered a place where "emotions, including fear and shame, are present and always welcome."

"3:15" will be part of syd hartha’s upcoming new EP, which will be produced by Brian Lotho. Combining folk and stripped-down elements with contemporary flair, syd wants to assert her creative agency by exploring specific moods per song, and offering a more introspective, personal approach to songwriting.

BARMM: A Diamond in the Rough

The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao’s (BARMM) history can be traced back to more than 500 years, wherein Bangsamoro was used to refer to people who were predominantly Muslim and indigenous people. While BARMM’s culture is known to be bound together by their conformity to the Islamic faith, they also share the goal of pushing back their long-standing challenge: conflict.

The long-standing challenge of conflict has caused the region to fall into a state of neglect, where the lack of equitable access to food and proper sanitation has deprived residents of proper health and nutrition. Batang Matatag, a movement supported by Save the Children Philippines and Erceflora Kiddie attempt to address this by improving the health and nutrition status of children starting with BARMM’s Bajau community in Iligan City and the municipality of Marantao, Lanao del Sur.

According to Edwin Horca, Team Lead for BARMM of Save the Children Philippines, “BARMM would always rank one of the highest in terms of poverty incidence, and it has been for the longest time the most neglected region. That is why in this area they have been struggling in terms of finding lasting peace, and most especially really hitting the developmental milestones that is expected of any region.”

In the face of dispute, the region is home to over 1.8 million Filipino children, and it fosters a unique and diverse way of life, which can be enhanced with the support of Batang Matatag.

The Bajau: Nomads of the Sea

The Bajau tribe from Mindanao were also known as sea gypsies for inhabiting the coastlines and traveling by boat from one island to another in search of fishing harvest. Despite their nomadic nature, they’re still often displaced due to the ongoing conflict. Though still a proud and hardworking tribe, they continue to struggle to find their place on land.

With 151 Bajau households living in Barangay Tambacan, they continue to have issues accessing their basic needs due to a lack of income and livelihood opportunities and the impact of natural and human-induced disasters.

“[When] we started to work with the Bajau community, we saw that they are struggling even at the barangay level,” said Horca. “Their access to food is already a challenge since the parents are not always lucky when trying to get jobs in the fish port, and since they also lack skills, they wouldn’t be given opportunities to be employed,” he added.

Marantao: People of the Lake

Marantao is a municipality in the province of Lanao del Sur and is one of the closest to Lake Lanao. It is also home to the last remaining habitable Torogan, which is a traditional ancestral house built by the Maranao people of Lanao for the nobility.

Despite Marantao’s colorful history, the community remains impoverished. They continue to struggle with clean water and sanitation access. “When we checked their facilities, we noticed that they get their water directly from Lake Lanao. When asked if they get sick from the water, they said they would experience diarrhea at first, but now have already adapted to it. "We actually told them they’re putting the young ones at risk,” Horca shared.

Their condition worsened when the pandemic hit the province.

“When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, they were further isolated and were not able to access the government-provided support to meet their day-to-day needs,” he remarked.

Diamond in the rough

Despite the challenges the communities face, they remain positive and motivated to rise above their plight and bring back the vibrance the region had with the right assistance and means, which is where Batang Matatag comes in.

“Batang Matatag forms part of Save the Children Philippines’ Life Changer for Children program. It aims to reach children and communities who are most impacted by inequality and discrimination. It addresses issues confronted by children and their communities and seek innovative and sustainable solutions through a child-centered whole of society approach,” Horca underscored.

Part of the movement’s co-design process is to empower the communities to realize what change they want through the process called ‘visioning’. From there the communities will be organized into committees that will act as representatives for any intervention planning that will occur.

“Batang Matatag is an advocate for these communities. Aside from the technical assistance that we will be providing, we also want to provide an avenue for the members to voice out their concerns, share their insights, and recommend solutions that will be beneficial to them in the long run,” said J Ann Mirasol, from the makers of Erceflora Kiddie.

Horca adds that Batang Matatag’s goal is to make the communities realize that they can reach their maximum potential mainly through their own doing with only minimal help from sponsors.

“We would like to create breakthroughs for children, where all of them survive and thrive, learn, and are always protected. As we journey with them, we must help them be empowered enough to create a community that is more inclusive and respectful of the rights of children; and after we have promoted and developed champions within the communities, then they themselves can promote and advocate their own needs,” he said.

Marantao and the Bajau community’s strong resolve to improve their lives shows the region’s potential for development and the residents’ determination to restore their region and culture to its former glory with the right champions.

Mirasol encourages the public to be one of the right champions for these communities too, “To help Marantao and the Bajau community in Iligan City reach their maximum potential, a portion of every Erceflora Kiddie purchase will be donated to Batang Matatag,” she concluded.

Geneva Cruz shares life as a single mom in Momcenter's Usapang Nanay

Singer and actress Geneva Cruz shared her motherhood journey with her son Heaven and daughter London on “Usapang Nanay,” a show produced by one of Gushcloud Philippines’ IP (intellectual properties), MomCenter. The show aims to feature various motherhood and parenting styles to inspire, educate, and entertain fellow moms.

On being a single mom

It was during her solo career in the 90s when she met Paco, her then husband and the father of her first son, Heaven. She admits that during that time, getting pregnant at such an early age - not to mention out of wedlock - was a big deal especially for the older, more conservative generation. This led to Geneva and Paco getting married unexpectedly in 1995 at the age of 19 and 24, respectively. They got annulled in 2001, but Geneva always considered giving birth to her son as a blessing rather than a mistake. Eight years after Heaven was born, Geneva was blessed with her second child, London.

Life in the US

In 2014, Geneva originally planned to give birth to her daughter London in the US, stay there for a while, then go home. But she realized that it would be the perfect time for her to be present for her eldest, Heaven. Geneva ended up staying in the US for six years as Heaven asked her to.

To support her family, Geneva got a nine-to-five job in Sales and Marketing at the medical spa she was endorsing. In the US, she had a daily routine that she was not really used to doing here in the Philippines. She would wake up at 5 a.m. from Monday to Saturday, to prepare her kids and herself for work, and to be at work right before 9 a.m. Once her 5 p.m. shift ends, she would come home to make dinner and bond with her kids again. This was her life in the US for three and a half years; she did this while still being on top of her career as a singer. Although it was hard, she found it fulfilling and rewarding to be a full-time single mom to both her kids.

Tips for fellow single moms

In the segments Mom Answers and Mom to Mom, Geneva answered questions from fellow moms and gave tips to those who are still navigating through the same journey.

“Hindi magiging madali ang lahat, it will take patience, self-love, self-care and attention para maging isang maayos na ina. Ibig sabihin, kailangan din natin alagaan ang ating sarili para maalagaan natin ang ating mga anak nang maayos,” said Cruz.

(“Everything won’t be easy. It will take patience, self-love, self-care and attention to be a good mom. This means, as moms, we also need to take care of ourselves so we can give our children the proper care they need.”)

“Momcenter aims to make every mom feel represented. By featuring different stories of our guest moms, to tackle hot topics like gentle parenting, single parenting, and homeschooling, our viewers can learn, be better informed and get inspired. At the end of the day, we want every mother to feel less alone in their motherhood journey.” said Jamie Paraso, Country Director of Gushcloud Philippines.

You can watch Geneva Cruz’s episodes of Usapang Nanay on MomCenter’s YouTube Channel. Like and subscribe/follow MomCenter’s Facebook and Instagram for more updates.
