Ten Years of Autotelic: From Obscurity to Ubiquity

Monday, November 21, 2022

Celebrated pop rock quintet Autotelic—singer-guitarist Josh Villena, guitarist Neil Tin, bassist Timothy “Pabs” Vargas, synth player EJ Edralin, and drummer Gep Macadaeg—marks their decade-old tenure through a show dubbed Isang Dekadang Autotelic, happening November 26, 2022, at 123 Block in Mandala Park, Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong City.
Formed in 2012 initially as a “side project” of sorts to the bands they were then in, the group soon found themselves—after a rigorous workshop of their intended sound, target milestones, and ballpark aesthetic—drawn to the union at hand.

More than spirited meeting-of-minds or spontaneous jam, those initial get-togethers became a problem-solving exercise: “How do we stand apart?” they asked. In Villena they certainly had a hook-churning pop machine, but it was up to the rest of them to fashion a sound largely (if not entirely) theirs. The answer lay in their shared love for OPM, sure, but also in their common adoration for dance pop, electronic music, and Japanese ephemera. This was evident in their debut eponymous EP (released in 2014), which boasted of a heady mix of danceable guitar pop and future-forward indie rock, but with narratives that veered from typical lovelorn fare but remained nevertheless accessible. “We wanted to make a dent, even just for a little bit,” Gep confessed. That dent became a burrow, and that ripple morphed into waves. Autotelic played bars like they were arenas; they projected on TV the way they would in a small café.

Armed with infectious tunes and bob-worthy arrangements, unsuspecting slices-of-life like “Dahilan,” “Laro,” “Languyin,” “Gising,” and “Takipsilim” became more than songs; it’s not so much that they became anthems either, but, rather, like choice pieces of furniture in an endearing, endeared, and well-appointed home. Both critics and fans agree. In their decade-long career, Autotelic have snagged accolades from Jam 88.3, Jack Daniel’s, Vandals on the Wall, Myx Awards, and, most notably, Awit Awards, where they won Best Performance Bya New Group Recording Artist for “Laro” in 2017.

“We weren’t gunning for these things, but we always appreciated it,” Neil sheepishly shared, stressing that more than the approval of suits, the band has always chased the approval of warm bodies, measuring themselves not by citations but the immediacy of the live show. Their forthcoming anniversary show on November 26 seeks to celebrate all of this and more. With fellow self-made stars in the marquee—the somehow-always-viral December Avenue, and DIY royalty Ang Bandang Shirley—the show is sure to give fans a worthwhile weekend to look forward to. Isang Dekadang Autotelic is being presented by Otelik and H2, with sponsors The Havas Ortega Group, Linya Linya, Jack Daniel’s, and Goto Believe, with the help of media partners JAM 88.3, 99.5 PLAY FM, and 91.5 Win Radio.

Emirates and Gulf Air Launch Codeshare Partnership

  • Partnership offers Gulf Air customers with global connections across Europe, Africa, South America and the Far East with one convenient stop in Dubai
  • The partnership is a significant milestone towards the growing relationship between Emirates and Gulf Air
Emirates and Gulf Air have today officially signed a unilateral codeshare partnership, starting this December*. The new agreement will offer easy connections and expanded choices for Gulf Air customers connecting to Dubai and onwards to a host of Emirates destinations across Europe, Africa, South America and the Far East.

The agreement was signed on the first day of the Bahrain Airshow, signaling a growing relationship between both airlines following on the framework of cooperation established last year. The agreement was signed by Sir Tim Clark, President Emirates Airline and Gulf Air’s Chief Executive Officer Captain Waleed Al Alawi in the presence of H.E. Mr. Zayed R. Alzayani, Gulf Air’s Chairman of the Board of Directors. The signing ceremony was also attended by members of each airline’s executive management teams.

The expanded partnership will see Gulf Air place their marketing code "GF" on Emirates operated flights beyond Dubai to a selection of some of the most attractive global tourism hotspots, offering new holiday options for Gulf Air customers. Travelers will be able to connect to points including Budapest, Prague, Warsaw, Algeria, Tunis, Bali, Hanoi, HoChi Minh City, Taipei and Sao Paulo.

The new codeshare agreement’s mix of unique points comes as travelers from the GCC have become more well-informed, value-driven and savvy, increasingly looking for new, diverse experiences and attractions beyond their traditional holiday destinations.

The new partnership will also offer customers the convenience of combined ticketing and check-in, a unified policy and seamless transfers for baggage, and competitive single fares on a multi-airline journey when connecting on Emirates. Customers can book their travel on Gulf Air’s website, through Gulf Air point of sales and online travel agencies as well as with local travel agents.

"We are pleased to partner with Gulf Air to offer their customers greater access and strong connection opportunities to unique destinations on our network, complemented by Emirates’ signature in-flight service and hospitality throughout their journey from Dubai. We look forward to working together and achieving more with Gulf Air in the near future, and further strengthening our relationship," said Sir Tim Clark, President Emirates Airline.

"Our relationship with Emirates Airline has always been strong and today we are reaching a higher level of collaboration with many more opportunities in the horizon between the two carriers. This partnership will empower both of us to offer a more elevated experience to passengers and widen their travel options," Captain Waleed Al Alawi, Gulf Air Chief Executive Officer commented.

Emirates currently has codeshare cooperation agreements in place with 26 airline partners and two rail companies around the world, expanding its network reach to over 300 cities.

Ruel releases confessional pop single “SOMEONE ELSE’S PROBLEM"

Friday, November 18, 2022

The British-Australian artist captures perfectly the feeling of letting in his second official single

British-Australian singer/songwriter and pop prodigy Ruel is back with the second official single from his highly anticipated debut record, “SOMEONE ELSE’S PROBLEM,” out now via RCA Records.

Written and produced alongside longtime collaborator, M-Phazes (Khalid, Sam Fischer & Noah Cyrus) with songwriters John Levine (Bebe Rehxa, Alessia Cara) and Casey Smith (Olivia Rodrigo), the track oscillates between regretful nostalgia and self-empowerment, displaying another side to the songwriter. Driven by gritty, pop-infused production, the hypnotic track sees Ruel effortlessly floating between confessional-style lyricism and soulful croons, as he perfectly captures the all too relatable feeling of letting go.

On the inspiration behind the song, Ruel shares, “SOMEONE ELSE’S PROBLEM is about that feeling you get when you realize the benefits that only the end of a relationship can bring. When you look through a different lens at all the time you spent with that special someone and realize you’re way better off without them. I wanted to write something with subject matter that was more lighthearted, kinda funny but still empowering. I really love this song and I hope my fans can relate to it and feel better about themselves after a shitty break up.”

After surprising his U.S. fans with a secret show at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn to commemorate the third anniversary of his critically acclaimed Free Time EP, Ruel is fresh from a run of sold-out pop-up shows in London, Paris and Berlin in support of previous single ‘YOU AGAINST YOURSELF.’ He then hits the festival circuit in November where he will headline the international music festival Riverfest, before taking the stage at GudFest in Jakarta.

Earlier this year Ruel kicked off his slate of new music with the intricately crafted pop song, “GROWING UP IS___.” The anthemic single quickly racked up over 45 million + combined streams and earned him a Best Solo Artist nomination at the 2022 Aria Awards and Best Australian at the European Music Awards (an award he’s won 2 out of the last 3 years). Adding to his existing repertoire of over 2 billion streams worldwide, the influential singer/songwriter has crafted an impressive body of work that includes the multi-platinum singles “Younger,” “Dazed & Confused,” and the Top 10 global smash turned triple-platinum song, “Painkiller.” His already decorated career includes a MTV Europe Music Award, a Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Award, an ARIA Award, and five ARIA Award nominations.

New evidence underscores preventive treatment as crucial for asthma management

Tuesday, November 15, 2022

According to the latest Philippine Consensus Report on Asthma diagnosis and management, approximately 339.4 million people worldwide suffer from asthma.[1] This makes the disease one of the leading causes of years lived with disability globally.1

Like other illnesses, the first step to treating asthma is to establish a proper diagnosis. This is done through an examination of recurring symptoms and the patient's history, or by conducting a spirometry test to look into the airway obstruction further.[2]

Once a diagnosis has been determined, the next step is asthma management. This involves keenly following medical guidance because not all asthma patients take the same medication. Some doctors may prescribe quick-relief medicine to control the symptoms of an asthma attack, while others prescribe long-term medication to help lessen the frequency and severity of the incidents.[3]

After receiving their treatment plan and medication, however, there is a tendency for asthma patients to cease going on annual check-ups.[4] In Why Asthma Still Kills, the National Review of Asthma Deaths' (NRAD) first national investigation of asthma deaths in the UK, they have noted that out of the 195 people who died from asthma during their review period, 57% were not recorded as being under specialist supervision during the 12 months prior to death.4 Behaviors like this may be attributed to many patients’ lack of awareness of their condition.[5]

Additional studies also support this reality, including research on How real patients with severe asthma experience their disease. This study found that its participants underestimated their asthma severity and symptoms, resulting in disease denial and passivity. The participants also noted that they needed a comprehensive understanding of their disease from the beginning.[6]

Knowing these realities makes proper treatment and disease awareness all the more necessary.

New evidence highlights long-term regular treatment as optimal

The latest research by Professor Dave Singh, a professor of clinical pharmacology and respiratory medicine at the University of Manchester, states that the daily usage of Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) treatments, otherwise known as maintenance inhalers, can effectively treat immediate asthma symptoms while also providing sufficient overall disease control.5

“Most may think that inhalers are only necessary during asthma attacks, as opposed to a consistent form of treatment,” says Professor Singh. “By looking at asthma as a chronic disease, patients will be able to view their treatment as a way to address the underlying source of their conditions,” he adds.

Using ICS inhalers on a regular basis has also been found to decrease the number and severity of patient asthma attacks.5 At the same time, it alleviates short-term symptoms like breathlessness, wheezing, or chest tightness,[7] all in all, making it an optimal form of treatment. “We’re optimistic that our research leads to a better understanding of asthma and its ideal treatment forms so that patients and their doctors can work towards improving their condition and long-term outlook,” Singh added.

Supporting Singh’s research is a recently published post hoc analysis of a GSK-sponsored AUSTRI study on the correlation between increased use of a reliever (albuterol) and an increased risk of asthma attacks.8 One of the key findings of the analysis revealed “In patients with a one-year history of exacerbations, ~92% of those treated daily regimen of ICS/LABA did not exacerbate during the treatment period.8

“There are very few studies that investigate pattens of reliever use in patients with a history of severe asthma exacerbations,” said Singh. “These results underline the importance of a maintenance regimen with a combination of [ICS/LABA] in opening new doors to achieving better asthma control for patients with moderate asthma in the Philippines.” Singh ended.

Zone V Camera Club, PLDT Home bring digital learning to underprivileged students

PLDT Home and Zone V Camera Club, a premier club of photographers, continue with their mission of building online learning hubs for underprivileged youth with students of ERDA SaBaNa (Educational Research and Development Assistance, Samahan ng mga Batang Nananambakan) in Tondo, Manila as the latest beneficiary.

To empower the students to do better in school and in life, Zone V Camera Club donated computers while PLDT Home provided a 400 Mbps broadband connection for the next two years. Jointly, Zone V Camera Club and PLDT Home have refurbished ERDA’s computer room to make it more conducive for learning, while the walls and tables have also been repainted. A mural on one wall was painted to depict the modern-day life of the students in Tondo, Manila, and how they cope with digital learning.

Beneficiary ERDA SaBaNa Foundation in Tondo has been providing educational assistance including school supplies, bags and uniforms, tutorials and workshops, and leadership and life skills training for disadvantaged children to experience holistic education. ERDA has so far assisted more than 800,000 children in their school and real-life education since 1974.

These kids belong to the generation of digital natives, but they don’t have access to computers at home or the physical space to concentrate on researching for their class assignments. PLDT Home’s connections mean they now have a wealth of information at their fingertips to aid them in their school education, so that they may satisfy their curious minds and their thirst for knowledge about the world around them. This will also give them access to educational videos without lag and download or upload faster.

Last year, Zone V Camera Club chose Assumption Development Foundation (ADF) in Sapang Palay, Bulacan as the first beneficiary of their flagship project, Images of H.O.P.E (Helping Others Prosper and Excel). Zone V sells printed photos taken by its members to raise funds and build more online learning hubs for underprivileged Filipino students while PLDT Home provides the broadband connection.

Zone V Camera Club was founded in 1978 through the help of the late professional photographer Vic Valenciano. Club members are composed of professional photographers and enthusiasts who won in various local and international photography competitions.
