Monday, November 6, 2023

Hundreds gathered towards a safe space to share stories, build connections, and learn how they can improve their well-being.

Last October 20-22, MindNation and Belle De Jour Power Planner held its inaugural on-ground event "You Got This! Creating Safe Spaces, Crafting Tomorrows" at the East Wing of the Shangri La Plaza. The event aimed to celebrate World Mental Health Day, raise mental health awareness and drive action towards investing in better well-being in communities and workplaces.

During this 3-day gathering, attendees immersed themselves in engaging talks and interactive workshops by mental health experts and advocates. Topics ranged from how to create safe spaces at work to gaining confidence, all highlighting the need for fostering supportive environments to build growth and resilience.

“Mental health is a continuum, where we could be fine one moment but get triggered the next,” said MindNation Chief WellBeing Officer Eiza Fusingan-Lappay. “It’s important we build safe spaces and support each other during challenging times.”

“Community-based mental health is our future,” adds The Millennial Psychologist Riyan Portuguez. “With mental health awareness increasing due to conversations like these, there is now also an increasing demand for more support and resources.”

And finally, tv host, athlete, and World Vision Ambassador Kim Atienza had this to say: “We are in the mindset of a mental health epidemic. Let’s be salt and light to all those we know and meet. We can all do our part to help others achieve Better Mind, Better You.”

To promote the accessibility and affordability of their teletherapy services, MindNation offered “You Got This” attendees complimentary 15-minute one-on-one chats with MindNation psychologists and WellBeing Coaches on-site. Those interested to book full one- hour teletherapy sessions enjoyed up to 50% discount on teletherapy sessions.

Recognizing the importance of effective planning and organization in the quest to support and promote mental health, Belle De Jour highlighted and offered special discounts for their 2024 BDJ Planner Collection. The 2024 BDJ planner collection comprises four distinct planners: Everything is Possible Planner, Work-Life Balance Planner, Health & Wellness Planner, and the Financial Freedom Planner. These planners are not just tools for organizing daily tasks; they also serve as a guide in achieving balance, wellness, and success in all aspects of one’s life.

“On behalf of Belle De Jour, it was truly inspiring to witness the community engaging in meaningful conversations about mental health and well-being. 'You Got This!' has been an incredible journey," remarked Darlyn Ty-Nilo, Founder and President of Belle De Jour Power Planner.

And we just want to make them realize that the online group isn't just a Facebook group; it's a real, thriving community that helps Filipinos improve their homes.”

Bigger, better One Stop Record Fair features vinyl and art

The One Stop Record Fair 2023 brought together music and art in one event for audiophiles and art lovers. The country’s best and biggest vinyl, audio equipment, and artworks were curated by more than 30 merchants gathered at the fair held at Estancia Mall in Pasig City.

From classic rock to pop, music from the '60s to 2020s, audiophiles dug through crates and piles of vinyl, CDs, and cassette tapes, scoring their “treasures” at a discounted price. Audiophiles were able to purchase interesting titles such as New Order Substance, Sybil Greatest Hits, Eraserheads Circus, Voltes V, Workshy, Queen The Platinum Collection, Julia Fordham, RSD Folklore Taylor Swift, 2Pac, Cocteau Twins Treasure (Japan pressing with OBI), Tatsuro Yamashita Spacy, Taylor Swift Speak Now, UDD Capacities, The Smiths 12" Single That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore, and The Wild Swan.

Turntables, speakers, and other audio gear were also at a much lower cost, allowing first-timers and collectors to take their vinyl for a spin. "We strive to bring in more merchants to provide more options for our visitors,” said Sari Osorio, the organizer of the fair. Among the record sellers are Sounds Inc. ,Lennox Records, Vinylhead Records, Manila Vinyl, New Vintage Culture, Mamsy Records Kapitan Plaka, and more. The event was sponsored by Audio Technica, Intune Pro Music Center, Skull Records and Gadhouse, who also had booths selling audio gear.

Seasoned actress Yayo Aguila is one of the merchants in the event from Tambai Records, where she is currently a business partner selling vinyl and audio equipment. Getting into the world of the music business, Yayo said she’s thankful for events like One Stop Record Fair for giving exposure and bringing together records and audio gear sellers to music lovers since their physical store is located in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. “Sana sa susunod, every weekend, Saturday and Sunday, na yung event na ‘to,” Yayo said.

Cleverly combining vinyl and art, local artists also showcased and sold their own prints, stickers, zines, and other original artworks at the event, such as Artcee x Fravald, Introvert Films x 35mmbyEL, DibuhoLabs x Datu Designs and Manila Ukiyo-E among others. From morning till night, there was no dead air as the crowd rocked along to music performances from the bands Fugu Musk, a punk rock band; 90s rock band Thy Holy Water; and Join the Club, who performed their greatest hits, “Lunes” and “Nobela.”

Stopping for a quick interview, the band members of Join the Club admitted they grew up in the era of analog collecting physical copies of their favorite singers and bands like The Beatles and Eraserheads. “Yung sense of possession, gusto ko talaga eh,” said lead vocalist Biboy Renia. DJ sets of Carlo Tayag, DJ Wilson, DJ Omeng, and DJ Cris Merto also set the mood at the event, mixing music from various decades and bringing much nostalgia to the crowd.

“The recent One Stop Record Fair featured rare finds and more vinyl titles that really piqued the interest of the crowd. It is my advocacy to bring all the record enthusiasts and art collectors together in one fair," Osorio mused. The next leg of the One Stop Record Fair will be in December 2023.

September Fever to champion Filipino regional indie music with ‘Music Talks’ and ‘Showcase Festival’ programming

Tuesday, September 12, 2023

September Fever

The two-day festival aims to give back to the indie music community in Cebu by fostering inclusivity and representation with tried-and-tested methods that work well in a DIY setting

Taking center stage with an electrifying twist, September Fever returns with a two-day festival that puts a spotlight on the regional independent music scenes in the Philippines.

Now in its sixth year, the event reformats into a Music Talks and Showcase Festival, improving its programming with a more grassroots-leaning, pro-independent music approach while providing an opportunity for budding and self-sustaining musicians to explore the ropes of the industry and learn from key resource speakers in the music business.

September Fever Festival Director Karl Lucente explains, “In a nutshell, this year’s edition of September Fever Music Festival is a dynamic blend of electrifying performances, informative discussions, and a strong sense of community. It's a moment when music takes center stage, artists shine, and audiences come together to celebrate the power of creativity and the love of music.”

Day 1: Music Talks and Networking Night

Music Talks, a new segment that was introduced by September Fever this year, is designed to empower and educate the participants on the crucial aspects of the industry. Curated by The Rest Is Noise PH, the forum will cover four main topics and has invited speakers from the scene to discuss the nitty-gritty of DIY ethos with tried-and-tested methods to communicate one’s music brand: Music Marketing and Branding (Ian Urrutia from The Rest is Noise PH and NYOU Consultancy); Music PR and Media Pitching (MC Galang from The Rest is Noise PH and AXEAN Festival); Artist Perspective: Touring Local (Mich Paclioga of Loop PH); and Music Production (Tim Marquez of One Click Straight).

“Beyond the performances, the festival is now introducing a series of engaging music talks,” shares Karl Lucente. “These talks feature industry experts who share valuable insights and advice, particularly for those embarking on their musical journey. From practical tips to behind-the-scenes stories, these discussions provide a wealth of knowledge that can guide aspiring musicians and enthusiasts alike.”

From music marketing and branding strategies to navigating the complexities of music production, these guest speakers will share practical insights and valuable tips that can truly make a difference in one's musical journey. “Additionally, they'll shed light on touring in our own land from the artist's perspective, providing a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to make a mark on the global stage,” Lucente reveals.

Following 'Music Talks,' the event seamlessly transitions into an insightful Roundtable Discussion that provides invaluable expertise on industry-related topics pertaining to the promotion of local artists. This discourse also proposes the unification of production teams from diverse regions, forming the foundation for September Fever's 2024 Regional Caravan. Esteemed music producers, production leaders, and industry experts gather to chart a path that transports VisMin's artists nationwide while championing the indie music movement—a convergence of creative energies where innovation meets collaboration, shaping the future of VisMin's indie music scene. The Roundtable Discussion will be attended by various professionals in the Philippine music scene: KC Salazar of Indie CDO (Cagayan de Oro); J Martino “Bobbi” Olvido of John Bottles (Cebu); Sandy Kiamko of Holodeck (Davao); Philip Biboso of Southlab (Koronadal); and Josh Alipe of Sapphire (Cebu).

Day 1 is then capped off with a Mixer/Networking Night that aims to connect the press, industry leaders, musicians, entrepreneurs, creatives, and VIP attendees with the goal of fostering meaningful collaborations and opportunities for the artists. Cebu-based rising artists Lolita Grey and Franciskoe will be performing, followed by a DJ set by the Baihaus spinners.

Day 2: Showcase Festival

While Music Talks lays the groundwork for aspiring musicians in the local indie scene, Day 2 presents a celebration of music excellence featuring some of the most notable names in the Philippine music scenes from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao—be it independent, mainstream, or anything in between.

This year’s September Fever Music Festival artist lineup consists of Cebuano acts Coloura, Kali Hoods, Tomorrow For Sure, Renzo Sy, Sansette, and Wonggoys. They are also joined by guest acts from all over the Philippines: Aira Casti, KRNA, Loner, One Click Straight, Oh, Flamingo!, The Itchyworms, and DJ Love.

Lucente emphasizes that the curation for the showcase format aims to highlight the vibrant tapestry of the Philippine music scene as represented by the eclectic and diverse lineup representing various regions in the country. “This comprehensive approach blends education, entertainment, and cultural exchange, ensuring attendees enjoy the performances while gaining enriching insights for their own musical pursuits,” he adds.

September Fever Music Festival VI is made possible with the partnership of The Rest is Noise PH, Filla Killa, Black Straw Prod Co, and Missing Scene. The music talks and showcase festival will take place on September 22 and 23 at From Here and Draft Punk in Cebu City, respectively.

AXEAN Festival

Now rebranded as AXEAN Festival, Southeast Asia’s leading music showcase platform will take place in Singapore from October 28 to 29, 2023

Six (6) Filipino music acts will be performing at this year’s AXEAN Festival, Southeast Asia’s premier collaborative showcase festival happening in Singapore on October 28 to 29 at Goodman Arts Centre in Singapore!

Filipino alt-rock icons The Itchyworms and critically acclaimed band Oh, Flamingo! will be joining Ena Mori, Alisson Shore, obese.dogma777 and LONER as the country’s representative to the second edition of the music festival.

Formerly known as ASEAN Music Showcase Festival, the newly rebranded AXEAN Festival will feature and attract networking opportunities with notable international talent buyers from Asia and the rest of the world.

Birthed in 2020 as a virtual music showcase festival, AXEAN Festival launched into the “real world” in 2022 and became an internationally recognized platform, bringing regional artists to the global music stage. With the announcement of the 2023 iteration of the festival, the organisers are taking the opportunity to re-introduce the festival with its new name – AXEAN Festival.

Festival co-founder Piyapong ‘Py’ Muenprasertdee explains, "Despite our different languages and customs, Southeast Asia is a region rich with historical heritage and shared cultures and identities. Colloquially, the term '"ASEAN" (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) is often used interchangeably with "Southeast Asia" due to reasons including the spoken language of its people, signifying the sense of unity we have as a region. After 3 successful editions, we want to make a statement of our commitment to elevate Southeast Asian music onto the world stage by renaming our event 'AXEAN Festival', with an 'X' symbolising our core values of collaboration and crossing borders, whether physical, lingual or cultural, while also inviting artists and fans from all corners of the world to celebrate and share their music with us!"

This first wave of artists performing this year is headlined by Shye, Reality Club, The Itchyworms, KIKI, and Oh Flamingo!. The event will also host performances from Singaporean pop artist Jean Seizure, Thai R&B artist Flower.far, Indonesian singer-songwriter TANAYU, and many more exciting artists.

AXEAN Festival is Southeast Asia’s first intraregional music showcase festival, an annual event that springboards Southeast Asian music onto the world stage held physically in Singapore with 2 main elements: a music showcase festival and business networking events.

Its inaugural edition was organized by 5 participating countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. It was held virtually via live video streaming of pre-recorded performances in September 2020, during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, as an initiative to help regional artists stay connected with their fanbase and gain international fans. The goal was to encourage artists and their teams to look beyond the pandemic and prepare for future export and international touring opportunities by being performance-ready and meeting with music business professionals from all over the world.

The second edition was again organized online in 2021, but joined by 2 additional countries: Cambodia and Vietnam. In 2022, the third edition was its first live edition, held in Singapore and jointly organized by the 7 countries with Laos added to its upcoming 2023 edition.

Honoring Everyday Heroes for National Blood Donors Month

National Blood Donors Month

Blood drive focuses on national need for consistent supply of life-saving blood

This National Blood Donors Month, Cardinal Santos Medical Center joins the global healthcare community under the banner of the World Health Organization’s "Give blood, give plasma, share life, share often," campaign. For 2023, the hospital focused on educating people and patients on the need for healthcare institutions to have a consistent and sustainable supply of blood donors and blood products.

The hospital also celebrated World Blood Donor Day with a blood drive last June 14, 2023. The drive saw a tremendous turnout of donors from all walks of life. Over 100 local community members, hospital staff and enthusiastic volunteers eagerly offered their support.

According to Fidel H. Tejada, who heads Cardinal Santos’ Blood Bank, even major Metro Manila hospitals are facing a challenge with the growing demand for blood and blood products. “Most of the big hospitals and Medical Centers in the country, private and government, including specialized hospitals are saturated. Our blood centers like Philippine Red Cross and Philippine Blood Center have a hard time keeping up with the blood needs of all these hospitals. This is the reason why we are doing our part on helping in blood collection in our institution.”

The event not only celebrated World Blood Donor Day but also served as a reminder that the act of giving blood is an act of love, compassion, and hope.

Dr. Marilou A. Abiera, an Obstetrician-Gynecologist and the chairman of Cardinal Santos’ Blood Transfusion Committee stressed the importance of gaining the cooperation of communities. “Patients and their families can support the blood supply by encouraging healthy individuals to donate blood and they can spread awareness about the importance of blood donation within their communities, workplaces and social networks.” She also points out that one person can save up to three lives with one pint of donated blood at minimal cost. “It’s safe, it saves lives and it’s free.”

Blood is needed in critical medical settings like accidents or injuries, surgery, treatments for illnesses like cancer, dengue and anemia and even childbirth. But blood donation doesn’t just benefit patients that need a transfusion as there are several advantages to being a donor. Regular blood donation is linked to lower blood pressure and a decreased risk of heart attacks. In Cardinal Santos, registered donors are also given priority if they ever need to receive a transfusion themselves as long as there is an adequate supply.

With the collective efforts of organizations like Cardinal Santos Medical Center and the unwavering support of donors, the world can continue to beat, one life-saving pint of blood at a time.

“[People] can help by spreading awareness about the importance of blood donation and encouraging others to donate. Additionally, expressing gratitude to blood donors can go a long way in recognizing their valuable contribution,” said Abiera.

Cardinal Santos’ Blood Bank is open every day for those who wish to donate their blood. Those interested in donating blood may call them at 8727 0001 local 4015. For more information about the other programs and services that CSMC offers, visit https://cardinalsantos.com.ph/. CSMC is also on Facebook, like and follow them at www.facebook.com/CardinalSantos.

Philippine Food Expo 2023

Philippine Food Processors and Exporters Organization, Inc. (Philfoodex), the organizer of the annual Philipine Food Expo, recently partnered with Union Bank of the Philippines (UnionBank) to help facilitate cashless payments at the 15th Philippine Food Expo which was held last April 28 to 30 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

Participating micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) were able to experience convenient, secure, and seamless transactions with customers via QRPH. This was done with the help of UnionBank's integrated payments gateway UPAY, which brings together a wide selection of payment collection options in one platform, allowing quick and easy cashless payments for customers.

Customers on the other hand were able to enjoy cashless payments with ease through various payment channels, as UPAY accepts payments from an expansive list of partner banks, e-wallets, and other e-payment service providers.

“With UPAY, accepting payments from customers is now easier and more convenient for the MSMEs of the 15th Philippine Food Expo. More importantly, this is an important step in their digital transformation, providing numerous long-term benefits to their business,” said UnionBank SVP, SME and Micropreneurs Segment Head Jaypee Soliman.

“As cashless payments continue to become more embedded in our daily lives, UnionBank will continue to innovate in providing cashless solutions that can benefit every MSME in the country as part of our “Tech-Up Pilipinas” advocacy,” Soliman added.

Meanwhile, UnionBank also deployed its award-winning Bank-on-Wheels to the three-day event so that customers who needed cash would also be able to withdraw conveniently. Being the first 5G-enabled mobile banking kiosk in the Philippines, UnionBank's Bank-on-Wheels is designed to bring essential branch banking services closer to customers.

To be able to use UPAY, MSME business owners can simply open a BizStarter account with UnionBank MSME Business Banking, which is a checking account with a minimum balance requirement of just P5000. With a BizStarter account, not only will they be able to use UPAY, MSMEs will also have access to UnionBank's trailblazing business banking solutions that can meet their needs, regardless of their size.
